Question about Reusing Beyond later on

Post by tnahid » Tue Feb 22, 2011 7:08 pm

I have a question about something. My daughter who is 4 is currently in LHTH. She really enjoys it BTW. :P

But, in the mornings, she is with us when we do our history, science, poetry and Bible verse. We do all of this together as a family, then I help each child with their individual stuff. I am wondering how this will be when she gets ready to do the Beyond curriculum herself. She seems pretty engaged on much of what we are doing and learning now, although I know she's not getting it "all". But, she does do remarkably well at memorizing her Bible verses and even sometimes answers question from our history read aloud. Also, I am not sure I should use Bigger with her next year or not, as she will be a very young 5 when she starts (birthday in Sept.).

Anyone else had this experience? Thanks for any input.

On another note, my children and I went to the Adventure Science Museum in Nashville, TN yesterday and there was a huge globe with the continents lit up on it. I was asking my 7 year old what the different continents were. I was pointing to North America and I said, "This is North America. So, (pointing down) what is this?" My 4 year old piped in, "South America!" WOW! She is absorbing a lot from just being little ears around big brothers! She knew it before my son did. He even laughed and said, "Wow, Ellie. That's good." :D :D

I'm in a similar situation! Even though my four year old is officially in LHTH, she's listening along and doing many of the activities in Beyond. Personally, I don't think it's a problem at all! :D I figure it's going to be at least 1 1/2 years before I'm doing Beyond with her, and I can't imagine that she will remember everything. Even if she does remember some things, I think that she will learn with Beyond in a far deeper way than she is right now. Does that make sense? :D

That's great that your daughter identified South America! :D
Blessings,
Elisabeth

That is so neat that she is absorbing so much! That is great about the continents. It's scary how many adults can't name them! I agree with the PP that it will be far enough in the future that she should be fine actually doing Beyond when it is her guide. I think there will be a different feeling to it when it is actually hers. :D

As far as Bigger next year, in general I don't think there will be anything objectionable. However, it does talk about wars and occasionally there is more violence. When the content is more violent, Carrie points it out in the guide so you should be able to glance ahead and decide whether or not it would be too much for her. I'm thinking there have been one or two instances that we've encountered so far that were more violent than typical. Carrie pointed it out in the guide, but I felt that my dc were ok with it so we read all of it. For a 5 year old though it might be a bit much to listen to so you may have to omit that part with your dd in the room.

My 4 yr old also spends time with us when we are doing Beyond, he comes and goes usually, but is involved and will also answer before big brother, even answered a math question before big brother could think the other day  . Anyway, I think it will be fine. At 4 they are still quite young and probably not even going to remember everything, and they will be able to experience it in a different way by the time they get to Beyond.

Riley listened to all the titles of the Storytime box of Beyond when he was 4 yo, as Wyatt was 7 yo and doing Beyond at that time. When we did Beyond with Riley, he said, "I think we might have read this book before, but I don't remember it - I just know I liked it, can we read it again, pleasssse?" He really didn't remember it well. He had a foggy notion of it, but not the details of it. I think that when it's officially dc's "school", and they are truly responsible for doing more than just sort of listening, and kind of halfway doing this or that with it, that is totally different. They listen more attentively, do all of the activities rather than just the little part they could do before, and so the learning is much deeper. Think about a book or an activity you did 3 years ago. Even if you do remember it fairly well, chances are you'd still get a lot out of reading it again - and more than likely, you just remember bits and pieces of it, especially if you weren't asked to respond to it fully in a learning type situation. You won't really be reusing it with your dd - you'll be using it fully expecting her to do absolutely every jot and tittle in it for the very first time - and that is when your little smart pumpkin will just take off with all that's in it! :D

My two littlest ones listened in on Bigger when my older siblings did it the first time. They wanted to see every part if it and practically did when they were doing LHFHG. They did Beyond last year and this year they are at Bigger and absolutely loving it. I think it is actually making it more special that they saw it absorbed what they could and actually are doing it now. I know they would have loved Bigger anyway because our family just loves HOD period but I think they may actually love it just a bit more for having seen it. :D

I've been wondering the same thing. We also have a 4yo and are using Beyond with my older two. She doesn't really listen in to the readings, but wants to join in with art and science activities. I usually let her join it, but focus on the older two...her art projects often look very different from my older two.
