Suggested Book List...
I was just wondering exactly what the "suggested book" list is? I guess I hadn't heard of that before.

Love my husband of 18 years this year;
Love my 3 teenagers--13, 15, and 16. They keep me young, but hanging on for dear life!
Used HOD in the earliest years with all three of them!

Here's the DITHOR page that has the book list on the right side of the top list
I have it-it's been a fabulous resource for me. It has suggestions for every genre sorted by reading level. So theres a list of "Historical Fiction" books and they are grouped into level 2/3 books, level 4/5/6 books, etc.
And it's only five bucks!!! It's really a priceless resource to me.
(hey...that could be one of those master card commercials..."HOD book list?? priceless!")

OK, time for more coffee...

I bought the book list, too. I will be using the library for some of our books, and I thought it would be a good resource for books to use with each genre if our library does not have the one(s) Carrie suggests in the manual. It was an easy purchase for $5.00...now I don't have to try to find the right genre, reading level, or appropriate title, and I know the content will be appropriate too, because Carrie has pre-screened it!
Thanks, Carrie!!

http://heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-optional3.php ????
This $5 list-- is this in addition to? Instead of?
Can anyone clarify?
Thanks!

Yes, this is a separate list. Your link is to the optional book packs. Those are to use with DITHOR, and you may buy them or try to find them used or at your library if you choose. The $5 book list is just a reference for those who may need it for financial reasons, or so you have other or extra choices in your reading. I'm sure it could be used for the read alouds or with DITHOR. It is NOT required. It's just an option for those who may prefer to make their own choices. Maybe Carrie will clarify this a bit better...

LeAnna,
The ladies are doing a great job of answering your questions! As they said, both the Sample Booklist and the Book Packs are optional to use with DITHR, because it is written to truly work with any book you choose!
The reason we put together the book list is to give you some idea of good books that would fit in each category at each reading level. It makes choosing much easier.
The reason we put together the book packs, is for moms who do not want to search or choose their kiddos books, but would rather have us do it for them! That way they get good books, on the correct reading level that fit in each genre, that we have carefully screened!
So, no matter how you choose your books, DITHR provides a great literature foundation for reading.
Blessings,
Carrie

Is the book list available as a download? I bought my DITHOR things at a homeschool store so all I need is a good book list. However, while I can (barely) justify spending $5 for a list of books, I can not under any circumstances justify paying $9.60 (w/shipping) for a list. Unfortunately, it is just not in my budget.

I think your post got lost on the boards. Sorry!
You're right, it is not available as a download. I don't know if it will be in the future or not...I can understand not wanting to pay the money and have to pay more for shipping. Maybe you could pm Carrie to find out if there is a cheaper way to work that out? You never know...

I have discussed this in length with my DH. The web guy in our house
he said..
"When one chooses to make an electronic file "available" via say a PDF, it means you will eventually lose proprietary control."
translation...
In other words if she makes it downloadable eventually it will get stolen.
Bookadventure.com can help you find books at your childs reading lvl only thing is you will have to check them for content before your read them.

Ladies,
This is a good idea, and one that we would like to get to someday, but as usual it gets added to the long list of good ideas that we'll get to when time allows.
Since the booklist is optional and not a necessary part of DITHR, in the prioritizing of what must be done, it goes on the back burner. It would be our only downloadable product, which makes the hurdles of figuring out how to lock it until payment is entered along with the technological headaches of figuring out how to fix it when the downloads not working for customers, not worth pursuing anytime soon.
Right now, homeschooling our kiddos by day, and just maintaining the board, returning phone calls, filling catalog requests, shipping orders to go out the following day, and writing and revising our latest 400+ page book fills all of our time.
Blessings,
Carrie

I think it's a bargain - even for $10. My list is tattered to almost shreds from its use. Think what we spend $10 on these days? 3 gallons of milk... 1-3 children's books... 1 DVD... A child's haircut... A shirt our child will wear one season... One good meal we cook...
A list that can be used to find quality reading material for my children from ages 2nd. grade on up through 8th. grade is pretty high on my priority list. That works out to be a little more than a buck a year when dividing out its use over time. Definitely worth the money in the long run IMO.

Good point, my3sons! An idea: if one does buy it (I did) you could place it in page protectors in a binder...then it will last that much longer. I think I'll do that with mine!
