If you do standardized tests for your own information . . .

Post by Heart_Mom » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:46 pm

I've never done a standardized test before, but I think I'd like to test my 9 year old this spring. (Our state doesn't require it, but I'm curious how he'll test.)

What test do you use for your children? I remember doing the Iowa test and CAT test (I think?) when I was in Elementary School, but I have no idea what's used now.

(If this is not an okay post, Carrie and Julie, please feel free to delete it! :D )
Blessings,
Elisabeth

My oldest is 9 and in 3rd grade too, and we've never done testing. We are in Florida, and I found released copies of the FCAT online, so I am planning on using that this year. It won't be official or anything; I'll just see how she does on it. We use the portfolio option for yearly evaluations; there is an elementary teacher who attends our church, and she has always been pleased with the children's work, so I haven't felt the need to do the testing option.

At some point if we want to use a test more officially and get percentiles, I'm looking at the PASS test from hewitthomeschooling.com.

I have used CAT through the independent testing service of another homeschool publisher for my own information in my current state. In the past I used the Iowa, when I lived in New York and testing was required, and it had to be administered by someone other than me.

I use the PASS test and like it. I am not a huge fan of testing but it can serve a purpose. I like the PASS only tests reading, language and math. It is also a christian company.

Our hs group uses the Stanford test.

When our oldest was in ps he used CAT and ITBS. CAT is a lot less questions, just basic knowledge. ITBS has more detail questions.
