A Math Funny!

We were working on bundles of 10 and ones and ds was to write how many ones are in the number 28. He carefully divided up the single sticks into groups of 3 and added 3 + 3 + 2 = 8. I replied that was very good thinking and he had done a good job. Then I said, "Let mommy show you a shortcut..(thinking I would remind him he could just look at the ones column of the number to see how many ones). He interrupted me, "Mommy, I don't want a shortcut. I want to use my brain so it will grow big and strong." Well, what parent is going to stand in the way of their child's brain growing big and strong. He finished the page by grouping the ones for each number into 3's and adding (I have no idea why 3's).
