Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
I'm starting to think about next year a little bit and looking over the storytime choices for Bigger. I always get stuck here because they all seem so good and it's hard to pick favorites for my little guy! So tell me your favorites and help me get "un-stuck"!

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
Well, I think Ben and Me is a riot, what a fun way to cover the Biography genre for storytime
And Homer Price was a favorite read-aloud for my son when he was little (even though he didn't get to use HOD). My daughters love the Misty of Chincoteague books because they love horses
All the kids loved the Little House series, and Farmer Boy in particular. So, I guess our favorites would be the books included in the Classic Interest set. However, my daughter just read and LOVED By the Great Horn Spoon!, which is part of the Boy Interest package.
Editing to say, just noticed your son's name is Ben-he might really get a kick out of Ben and me
I don't work for Heart of Dakota
, but have you considered using Little Hands to Heaven for your preschooler? It's only 30 minutes a day and such a great preparation for the next level, Little Hearts. If you have the chance to use it, it is worth it, such a great program!

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
Yes, we did use LHTH with both boys and loved it! That was actually how we found HOD to start with and now we're hooked.
We're planning on using LHFHG for K in the fall - so right now with Sam we're just filling in by getting a head start on math and phonics, doing some of the earlier R+S preschool books - and lots of stories and puzzles. And he's usually listening in on big brother's storytime - even if he's not in the room with us...

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
We are looking forward to Bigger in the fall too. I've ordered titles from the Classic, Boy and Girl Set!
Baby Island, Ben and Me, The Whipping Boy and By the Great Horn Spoon are titles I don't want to miss. My son can't wait to hear The Indian in the Cupboard, Balto, Encyclopedia Brown and Rabbit Hill. We read Homer Price several years ago, but I'm hoping to do it again. I'm very tempted to order Grandma's Attic as well, because it has so many great reviews. I'm curious as to how many people have read this with their sons, or if it's something your daughters would enjoy more ...
Have fun thinking about your selections and I look forward to reading other's suggestions.

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
We haven't done Bigger yet, we are heading there next year. My dc and I actually sat down last night and I read through the descriptions from the HOD website. We voted and whatever book had the most votes, we are reading in school for the storytime plans. The other books that someone voted for and we want to read are on a separate list for family read alouds in the summer and evening times. I know it may not help as far as our experience with books, but I thought I'd let you know what we chose.
Oh, and I have 1 ds and 1 dd.
Ben and Me or George Rogers Clark (still can't decide)
Baby Island
Understood Betsy
The Indian in the Cupboard
Encyclopedia Brown:Boy Detective
Balto and the Great Race
Homer Price or By the Great Horn Spoon (still can't decide)
Misty of Chincoteague
The Whipping Boy
Some of the ones we chose were because we've already read some of the other ones on the list. Also the other ones that are undecided because they are available to read on the extension package and we're still trying to decide whether to do those or not. We fall in the range where we don't need them, but hate to pass up so many good books.

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
We chose between all three lists because we had read some of the books on all the lists. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices!! We have read only three so far in Bigger: George Rogers Clark, Snow Treasure, and Understood Betsy. All three have been huge hits with my boys.
Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
We are doing Bigger spread over 2 years (he was a young 7 when we started) and we are nearing the end! I had to jog my memory on what books ds loved.
Adventure: "SnowTreasure", wow was that every intense and fun!
Non-Fiction we did "Balto and the Great Race"... He loved, loved it very much!!!
Mystery: My ds loves the Castleberry farms books. "Foot prints in the Barn" and he loved it and read it himself afterward.
Humor: we are currently reading a pick from Beyond: "The House on Pooh Corner", I thought I had By the Great Horn Spoon, he had wanted to read this book on his own so I just picked that. He likes it!
Success with you picks!

Re: Favorite storytime books for Bigger?
So far there the two that really stand out are Ben and Me and Rabbit Hill. We're going to be reading By The Great Horn Spoon coming up so I'm glad to hear others so highly recommending it.
