Grammar?

My ds 7.5 is doing Beyond right now, and it is going great for him. He will be doing Bigger next year for 3rd grade. He will be doing Singapore 3a/3b, and I'm trying to figure out of he should just do R&S 2 as scheduled or R&S 3. I have not done much grammar with him so far. We do Primary Language Lessons a bit, some Mad Libs, some of the grammar lessons in Beyond, as well as some grammar from a 2nd grade workbook I bought at Costco. I'm not at all familiar with R&S grammar, so any advice is appreciated.

This is my first year with R&S. I am using r&S 2 with my daughter in Bigger and my son is using r&s 3. 3 is definitely more advanced than 2. He is in 4th grade, but based on the recommendations of the ladies on the board, I started him in the r&s3 since we'd not used it before. Some of it is new and challenging for him and some is review and we breeze through or skip. R&S2 seems just right for my daughter. Hope that helps.

I'd probably do R & S 2 still. R & S English is considered a year advanced. HOD has an overall goal of dc finishing Level 6 by the end of Grade 8. Levels 7 and 8 are high school credit worthy. Unless your ds has had more grammar than is in Beyond guide already, 2 would be good to start with. Sooooo, IMO, it gets hard soon enough, why not start a little easier and let ds grow into it? Just my 2 cents though.

twoxcell,
I agree that it would be good to start in Rod and Staff English 2 rather than getting to the upper levels of Rod and Staff too quickly.

English 2 also has many other excellent skills wound within the program beyond just basic grammar. I look at it as a time to teach my little guy to write one section of the English 2 each day correctly and neatly on wide ruled notebook paper, so the practice in that skill daily alone is worth it for me!

English 2 is such a solid introduction to spoken and written English and lays a great foundation for English 3, making the transition the next year painless. Plus, it's great preparation for standardized testing too if you happen to have to do any of that.
Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie! We will be doing testing at the end of third grade. I checked out samples of R&S 2, and 3, and I think I will just go with 2.
