Anyone made gluten free air dry clay? (PHFHG Unit 5)

Post by doubleportion » Mon Jan 17, 2011 10:55 am

We are on Unit 5 of Preparing and I would really like to make the air dry clay gluten free. Has anyone done this successfully? Gluten free flours are expensive, so I don't want to waste the ingredients and have it not work.

Thanks!

We aren't in Preparing yet so I don't know if this recipe would work for you or not because it has to be baked in order to harden. It doesn't use anything expensive though, so maybe the activity could be tweaked to make it work? :) http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/ ... beads.html

And, here's an actual GF play dough recipe that I believe hardens in 24 hours and uses only 1/2 c. rice flour.

GLUTEN FREE PLAY DOUGH
Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup rice flour
• 1/2 cup corn starch
• 1/2 cup salt
• 2 tsp cream of tarter
• 1 cup water
• 1 tsp cooking oil
• Food coloring, if desired

PREPARATION: Mix ingredients. Cook and stir on low heat for 3 minutes or until mixture forms a ball. Cool completely before storing in a seal-able plastic bag.

Edie,

Although this past thread is mainly dealing with gluten-free subs for LHFHG, I thought I'd post it here as it may give you a few jumping off points for future gluten-free subbing. :D Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1063

It may not help at all, but I just thought I'd link what I found. :D
Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks for the link, Carrie.

We have different allergies than the ones mentioned on that thread. We have to avoid gluten, soy, casein, sugar, and a million veggies and most fruits. But his staple foods are meat and nuts. I do make a cooked gluten free playdough with rice flour, but was hoping maybe someone had tried the air dry recipe and had some experience with it.

Since we are actually doing LHTH with my middle ds who has the allergies, I don't have to have a recipe for the air dry clay right now. But it is always fun to give little brother a chance to join in on the craft or hands on activity when we can.

I have found it pretty easy to modify things in LHTH to meet his needs. And I LOOOOOVE that all that is required are things that we have around the house. Now special trips to the craft store or grocery just to do a project. :D

Thanks for the link and the recipe! Def saving these away for future use.
