How do you know when your child is ready-LHFHG

Hello,
I have studied the placement chart and am familiar with it. My son is amost 5, and he keeps asking to start school. I know that he doesn't know best and that I must decide when he is ready. I am not trying to wish his younger years away, but I am excited to try LHFHG!! But....HOW will I know that he is ready for the skills that will be introduced??? He has done most of LHTH....but I have never pushed writing or listening to long readings if he is not engaged. I have not pushed any phonics mastery or so- forth. I feel like I just haven't "tested" those waters yet. But.....he is smart as can be and soaks up what we do around here. He is showing interest in writing...wants to learn how to write his name.....likes practicing writing letters on paper....asks "mom, what does this say?" when looking at something with writing on it. Well, I am in a hurry here so sorry for bad grammar...!
Just interested in what you have to say...those of you who have taught a child "from the ground up" with reading, writing, etc., as I have not yet done in our homeschool----how do I know for sure what "readiness" looks like???
Thanks!!
