Child's History of the World

Post by Marsha » Mon Mar 24, 2008 10:13 am

Can anyone tell me what the measurements are on these?
I got one copy that was 7" by 9 1/2" and I had one years ago that was smaller.
What size does HOD sell?

Thanks

Marsha,

You will need the updated version of "Child's History of the World" published by Calvert (the original publisher). It is only available as a hardback. If you have a different version, it will not match the page numbers in our guide. One of the reasons we will use Calvert's version is that it has been updated to remove any language which would be considered dated or inappropriate today.

The latest version also has several chapters added on the end to bring it into the 20th century. Hillyer (who wrote CHOW) was the head master of Calvert, so Calvert owns the rights to "Child's History of the World" and can make changes as they see fit. :D

I had a small paperback version published by Sonlight, which does not reflect the changes made by Calvert. Consequently, the Sonlight version also fell apart at the binding, which was very frustrating for us.

So, we'll be carrying the hardback from Calvert.

Blessings,
Carrie

Hi,
The copy I have says Copyright 1997 , is by Calvert, and has 91 chapters. Is this the same one?
I am going to order the complete packages, but am planning to get extra copies for the kids.

Thanks

Marsha,

Yes, that sounds like the right one! Our copy is also published in 1997 by Calvert and has 91 chapters (and is hardbarck)! So, you're set! 8)

Carrie

That's really good to know. 8) I had no idea there were two versions.

There's also an original version which is now out-of-print, but can still be found at used book sales and from out-of-print dealers like Alibris. That version has some language that would be inappropriate by today's standards. It does not have the later chapters either. The original version was re-released more than once, so there are several similar versions like that!

Before Calvert released an updated version of CHOW, Sonlight released their own version with it's own correcting of the content that would not be considered politically correct. But, it does not have the later chapters added and did not retain the same formatting as the original version. So it was blurry and difficult to read. The maps were very difficult to read and the pictures quite fuzzy. :o

After Sonlight's version was released, Calvert finally took their original version and corrected a word here or there, rewrote a few paragraphs as needed, and added the end chapters, while still retaining the original formatting and design of the book. So, it is the most pleasantly formatted version, with the clearest type-setting, maps, and pictures. We much prefer it above all others. :D

Hillyer was a master storyteller, and we are privileged to have his living history text around today.

Carrie

Marsha,

We did look into listing page numbers from previous versions in our guide to make it easier for people to use any version! But, when we realized the differences in formatting and text and picture quality among versions (not to mention the inappropriate word choice), we decided to just stick with the latest Calvert version. Sorry for the confusion!

Blessings,
Carrie
