We were in unit 11 of Bigger and we went though the triangle trade of slavery and discussed slavery.
I was wondering what did you tell your kiddos? that slavery was abolished - end of story?
Did any of you talk to your kids about bonded child labor, slavery, and the oppression that still exists today?
I did cause, well that is just the world view we live in. Yet I was wondering how far out in the out field I am.
I'm kinda glad I did too, as we had like piles of prayer requests over bonded child labor, and Bengali tribals that are virtual slaves, lately at prayer meeting. School gave my kids a much better understanding of what slavery means and it helped them pray.

Re: Slavery
We had some really interesting discussions about slavery. We talked about how and why the slave trade started, why it was important in the colonies, how it impacted the civil war, and many other things. We talked about the slave labor that exists in other countries and how it impacts us and our economy. Of course these were all very simplistic views of things, but my dc had tons of questions and we continued to talk about it for days in class and out of class. Even tonight, we were watching the movie Felicity and in that movie there was an apprentice who ran away. We talked about how a contract as an apprentice was similar to being a slave, and he didn't have a legal right to leave his boss. These questions and discussions all stemmed from our reading our slavery in Unit 11.
When people look at the guides, I don't think they realize how deep it really is! I don't think you are in left field at all. I wish we could have all had a big round table and talked about it together. Of course, we would probably still be talking.
