Understanding the Guide

Post by doubleportion » Sun Nov 28, 2010 2:02 pm

So I want to be sure that I understand how all of this works. I have the Preparing TM. I am buying the books from the Economy Package, the Science Adder Package, Basic Package, & Self Study Deluxe History Package. Is that too much? I have a very gifted 4th grader and would rather more than not enough. We will be doing R&S English 2 to lay a foundation while continuing with ILL. But I am not sure if I could just get R&S Eng. 3 and start it right away as scheduled in the guide. We will continue Singapore Math 3B. So with all those books on hand, she should be doing all of the left and right sides of the TM right?

We will be doing the read alouds scheduled in Storytime probably at bedtime (that is my dd's time with her Dad and he likes to be involved in our schooling)

We will also have DITHOR using the 4/5 student book. But I may wait to start that until about a week or more into starting everything else.

So do I have all this straight or am I missing something? Just want to be sure before we jump into all this after the holidays.

Thanks,
Edie

Sounds like you have everything you need, but personally I would suggest going ahead and doing Rod and Staff 3 with your 4th grader rather than 2, as the 2 may not be challenging enough.

I agree with the previous post...R&S 3 would probably be more suitable for your dc. I am in Unit 5 of Preparing with my nearly 4th grader and I waited a few weeks to get settled before starting DITHOR too which worked for us.

You are understanding the guide just right! :D Yes, you are going to be set with all of those wonderful living books and resources. I agree I'd do R & S English 3. I think your dd is probably ready for it. You can do a good portion of it orally on marker board - many moms (including me) do that and enjoy it. Have fun with PHFHG - there were many books we loved dearly in that year! :D

Thanks for all the input, ladies!

I am super excited about starting. It is really cool to see how God is providing all our needs to start HOD, which is just confirmation that it is His plan.

Julie, I think that is the way I will probably do allot of it. I actually already own R&S English 2 (got it free from our homeschool group used book sale) and leafed through it today. I plan on hitting the highlights with my dd. We did do about 3 exercises orally today (her hand was tired from lots of math and she is auditory). I just want to be sure she understands what's a noun, pronoun, verb, adjective etc. I think I can kind of pick through the sections of R&S 2 and get her up so speed with terminology. I intend on buying R&S 3 this week (Lord willing).

I just have to say that I LOVE the Robert Louis Stevenson poetry in Preparing. I already have A Child's Garden of Verses and intend on using that when we do the poetry. :?: But what do you do if there are some of the poems that your dc already knows? We have studied some of those in previous Language Lessons in Intermediate Language Lessons or Primary Language Lessons and dd memorized them back then.

Can't wait to get started!!!

Oh good, well I hope she enjoys R &S 3! :D My ds had several Robert Louis Stevenson poetry books in his room before we did them in PHFHG. I wouldn't worry a bit about your dd having gone through them before. :D Creatively writing her own poetry based on his works will be totally different. :) Actually, I felt it was a bonus my ds was somewhat familiar with them already, as it helped him write his own creative interpretation of them. Have fun!
