Poetry across the guides

Post by brenm37 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 3:40 pm

My 3 daughters were having a discussion the other day about the poetry in each of their guides - Beyond and CTC, but it also included Preparing, which we did last year. This discussion included comparing Robert Frost's work to Robert Louis Stevenson's. I was just listening thinking how awesome it was that they were even having such a discussion! I appreciate that we have the time to look at and study poetry as well as the 3 R's, one of the pluses for us of HOD! :D

This is amazing! I must honestly confess that during my school days I never even knew who Robert Louis Stevenson OR Robert Frost were, much less knew any of their poetry! Both men were such amazing poets and writers that it is a shame most schoolchildren know little of their work! I would have loved to be a bird on your windowsill to hear your kiddos' discussion.

Blessings,
Carrie

How neat that your dc had that discussion! This is the purpose of poetry (IMO) - to appreciate it enough that it becomes something that seeps into our daily lives in some way, shape, or form. :D We had a similar experience - my oldest ds was memorizing his poem for RTR. When he shared it with our family, my middle ds surprised me and stood up and recited one of his poems from Bigger Hearts. He'd not been asked to memorize it, but he's just learned it through our Bigger Heart's poetry lessons and his copywork of it. It was happy moment! :D I'm glad your dc are taking poetry to heart too - and also glad for you as a fellow mom, that you got your own happy moment too! :)
