The Reading Lesson--Questions!

Post by MommyInTraining » Sat Mar 22, 2008 1:51 am

Well, I am thinking of stopping SWR and using something else for my children. I want something simple and effective to teach my son to read. Since he will be 7 in May, I would like to find something I could finish in a few months. I have 2 questions about The Reading Lesson:

How quickly could I finish it, does it take longer than a year?

I have been told it contains talking animals, is this something that could be skipped over or is it an intergral part of the program?

Thanks so much for your help!

Well then I think you you could modify it but there are some spots in the actual book where animals talk. I am just thumbing through and I see a few places. You definitely need to skip the cd for your family. Nothing but talking animals there. There are about 400 pages total if you start and you the number of pages by age. See Carries explanation here.http://www.heartofdakota.com/phonics.php

Another suggestion for you would be Alpha phonics. I looked at my copy of that and there are no talking animals that I can find. I think that would maybe be a better match for your family. Just to let you know too First Reader also has talking animals. I think Alpha phonics might be best for you guys. It is a good program and there are some phonics cards that you could use to drill the phonograms on Mott's Media. I think they are called Phonics made plain. That would take the place of the drill that the cd accomplishes in The Reading Lesson.

Another alternative, an expensive one but if you like SWTR then YES phonics is the super easy version of that and can be done a little quicker but more labor intensive than alpha phonics. Here is the site for alpha phonics http://www.howtotutor.com/ I really think that is the best bet. It will require no modification and you can use it as it. It also is quick and like I said similar.

Hope that helps!
