part of HOD? When we used to ask this in ps, most of my class said "recess". That was kind of depressing, though I kind of expected it, at least from the boys (sorry to sound stereotypical, but it was about the only time they got to move! ). I asked my oldest ds (who's doing RTR) this question, and he answered "reading". In ps, that would have meant the subject of reading, but when I asked my ds what he meant he said, "Well, all of the books we get to read. You know, like "Peril and Peace", "Exploring Astronomy", "Mystery of the Silver Coins", that "Boyhood book", my DITHOR book - you know mom, READING!" I had to laugh. I think he touched on almost every subject of school. I guess this is a thumbs up for the living books approach.

My middle ds always just answers with the last thing he did. It seems to be whatever's fresh in his mind. So I asked him after we finished math, and he said, "I love math!" But then after I read "Understood Betsy" to him, he said, "Oh no, I have to change my answer, this is my favorite!" This continued throughout the day. Maybe this is one of those questions older dc can answer better, but what about your kids, what's their favorite part of HOD?

Last year Noah would have said the Poetry writing in Preparing and Grandpa's Box. I just asked him and he said for CTC it is the history project. Of course that may be because we had so much fun this week making the Philistine helmets. I know he also loves the watercolor painting and the storytimes. Depending on the day those would probably get his vote. What I think is great is he doesn't dislike anything! There are a few things he would say aren't his favorites, but he doesn't dislike them. I heard the "I don't like this" often about things when he was in ps.

Blake in Preparing likes the History drawing and Projects the best.
Ash doing LHFHG likes the Thornton Burgess books the best.

I just asked both kids and here is what they said:

My oldest son's favorite part of CTC is Poetry - watercolor paintings. His next favorite is History projects and then Science (reading).

My youngest son said his favorite part of Beyond is "all of it where you read to me" - so History, Science, and Story Time. His next favorite is Singapore Math!!!!! Do you know how happy this one comment made me? Before Singapore with HOD, he HATED math. Now, it is his second favorite thing! WOW

I think on average they would be the read alouds and the activities. My kids love the read aloud part and they actually like to narrate and answer questions. And I know they love the art and science activities because before HOD we never got to them. I know my oldest really loves the part where she gets to read by herself. Interestingly my dd that struggles with reading also says her favorite part is what she reads on her own. I just asked her and I was actually shocked at that but she is into CTC. She says she loves the CTC independent history part where she gets to read and then do an activity. Have to say I never thought I would see the day when anything she liked to do on her own involved reading. That is a blessing!

9 yo DS in Bigger: storytime and poetry.
7 yo DS in Little Hearts said, "are you kidding me?! Storytime!"

Julianna - almost 4 - coloring and cutting (we are just doing fine motor skills workbooks though right now, midway through LHTH and will start back in February)

Grace - almost 6 - LHFHG - math, reading (her reading, inbetween phonics and ERs) and finding the answers book.

Jayden - 7.5 - in between Beyond and Bigger, but while she was in Beyond her answer was - math and spelling

They hate being read to... all three of them always have disliked that very much.... it's getting easier now that they are reading more and more

DD in Bigger - She loves the Cheerful Cursive.
DS - Loves any thing that's cut and paste.

For my kids, in Beyond, I would say it's definitely the read-a-louds and emerging reader books. We are reading Paddington Bear right now, and they think it's so funny! They also love the science!
I would say that the read a louds are one of my favorites too! I love not feeling like i have to exam each book carefully to see if it's okay for them to read. I trust Carrie's picks and they have all been wonderful! Love the notebooking too! It's nice to not have a lot of workbook pages, but a keepsake of all their drawings and writings! Love it!

DS immediately answered, "Storytime!" He is just eating up Boy of the Pyramids right now. He says he also really enjoys the watercolors and the science reading. He was looking at the Apologia book the other day and asked, "Can you get more of these books, Mom?"

What a blessing! He doesn't really like to admit that he actually LIKES school, but he does!

I would say that the Burgess books have been his favorite so far, and Math a close 2nd.

Both of my dc said reading the books. They especially love the Storytime plans and the Emerging Readers.
