Suggestions for scheduling a faster pace for Beyond...

I am thinking of switching my daughter over to the entire program of Beyond...for the rest of the year. We have kind of a funny situation. We used Beyond last year, following the plans as is until January of 2007. At that time, dd was still struggling more than I wanted with reading, so we put a hault to everything but L.A., reading aloud, copy work, and math. So, we only completed the curriculum guide to about the middle of Unit 15. This year,we've been using the emerging reader's schedule with her, and at the beginning of January, we went back to Beyond.. for spelling too. (It's a long story why we didn't just stick with HOD to begin with... ) Anyway, we are doing Bigger...next year with my older two, and Little Hearts..with my youngest. We've been intending to finish Beyond...at the end of the year. Now I'm just thinking we should start Beyond..after our vacation next week, and double up to end by mid-June when my son will be finishing his curriculum. What do you all think? I think she's capable of doing it...I just want some advice on how I should schedule it. We have 16 weeks with 34 Units if I try to do ALL of the Units. I would love to hear some possible scheduling options. :? Thanks so much!

By the way, I was looking at Bigger...with my oldest son today. He had been talking about how his math is boring. (we're switching to Singapore next year) I was showing him the Singapore workbook and textbook for next year, the books he'll be using for the extension pack, and the R&S English. He said, "That looks like it will be fun for next year." I'm so excited! Hubby wants me to finish what we have ( I asked if we could just start BIgger...now  ), so we can't start 'til mid-summer. I am really looking forward to digging in and learning together, the shorter school day, and the 'fun'!

It sounds to me like you have completed the right hand side of the pages but not the left. Is this correct? If so then you could easily do 2 history readings a day and then pick and choose the other activities. Does this make sense? Try going through the manual that you haven't done yet and seeing what you are comfortable dropping and what you can double up on.

Yes, that sounds accurate. I hadn't thought about it that way. I meant she read aloud...so we would still need to do the storytime box. So, I could just do the history, poetry, bible, music, & the rotating history/science/art/geography box, continuing with the L.A. the way we are and the math we are currently doing, and adding the storytime? Thanks Shera, just having someone write it out for me helped clarify how it might work. I don't know why I can't seem to come up with this on my own... :?

This sounds like a great plan, inHistiming! It takes a bit to sort through things, which is why it's so great to have each other here. InHisTiming - I've been thankful for your thoughts and advice many times over already.

inHisTiming,

Shera did a great job of helping you! :D I'll just pop in to say that if you've already done "Beyond..." through unit 15 previously, I wouldn't redo that portion. I would just pick up the guide from where you left off and finish the rest. I think that is what you intended, but I was just clarifying myself as I was thinking through it.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks, Carrie. I hadn't decided how I should do it. We did complete Beyond through Day 3 of Unit 15. I just don't know if she remembers what we learned, or if it really matters. So, I was thinking both ways, what would work best; you think just going from Unit 15?

inHistiming,

I would definitely just pick up where you left off, especially since you are wanting to finish it this year. :D I am not a huge fan of redoing the same lessons with the same kiddo, whether it was awhile ago that you did them or not.

I think it is hard to keep kiddos interest (or the teacher's for that matter) when it's content that you've both been through once already. Your little honey may or may not remember what you read in the past, but that's o.k. (as we don't remember everything we read either)! You're just going for the layering approach, as you layer learning of similar topics through the years (and it meshes together to create links in their minds).

Blessings,
Carrie
