Do you order all your HoD materials from the company or is it acceptable to find used on amazon/used book stores?

I have found that unless you already own several of the books in each package that you need you won't be able to beat HOD package prices

! And you also don't run the risk of getting a wrong editions where page numbers do not match up.

This year was my first order and I tried just purchasing the TMs here and am still looking to complete the other books! I have to admit that I really regret not just getting the whole packages, because I don't think I'm really going to save much if any money by searching for the books elsewhere. My plan for next year is to buy it all at HOD for one-stop shopping, except for any of the deluxe packages IF I happen to already own more than one of the titles. I have spent a lot of time comparing prices at Amazon and RR, and really the deals HOD offers are very competitive with those places, since you get a "package discount". And I think it is nice to support the company that we will be using, too!

I used to wheel and deal. Not any more.

I do think it is acceptable, Carrie has created this program to be flexible and so you can use books you have or from the library. She does understand that you are on a budget. So I don't think you will be offending them if you only order part of the "plan"
that said...
I have been blessed by having all to books I need when getting the complete package. They have very competitive prices, I've looked at homeschooling packages that were in the $2000.00 range!! The local half week christian school here where parents homeschool 2 days, kids go to school 2 days is over $4000.00 for 3rd grade! And the higher the grade the more the tuition is!)
I also did a few searches I won't mention names but prices were well over Carries, 3rd grade was $380.00-1000.00. Wow its been a while since I looked.
Even with the deluxe packages added she is well on the low end of the scale

I agree the prices are very competitive if you need most of the books. I do however get my storytime books from the library.

I already owned several of the books that were included in the beyond package. I worked out the cost with all of the books and again without the books that we already owned and they were within two dollars of eachother, because of the discount when you buy the package. So I purchased the entire package and just sent the duplicate books to a cousin to enjoy. I prefer not to have to hunt around so the package makes sense for me.
