DD 4 and LHFHG?

Post by alydar » Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:42 am

Hi again! :)

First let me express my new found deep love for this program! It is a true blessing and I am so thankful for it, it's creators, and for the wonderful support found here. I cannot tell you how blessed I feel!

Now, I do have a concern....I am using LHFHG for my DS 6 and using all the kindergarten materials except for Thinking Skills which he can do quite well. I figured this is our first official school year so we're taking it easy and really trying to enjoy the journey (which isn't hard to do at all!!) I also am using LHTH for my DD 4 mainly for her letter & sounds learning. The "problem", if you want to call it that, is that she is right in there with DS doing all the LHFHG activities except for any written work (no handwriting, written math, or thinking skills type stuff). And she's doing WELL with it. I know you can make these programs as flexible as you want or need them to be but if she cruises along with DS in LHFHG at age 4 what in the world do I do with her next??? I really don't see her being able to go into Beyond at 5 years old (stranger things have happened I suppose but....). And there's no way to 1/2 speed her. She's too insistant on being included in everything! Basically, I've been doing LHFHG with both and then supplementing with LHTH for her to do letters and craft things. I just don't know what to do with her next year. Help?!

Yeah, I'm so glad that you are having fun so far! It's wonderful that your dd is so interested and having such a great time with LHFHG. I know it's hard not to worry about what will come next year, but I guess that is going to be my advice. Children at this age often enjoy repetition so it's possible that she will enjoy doing LHFHG next year again. Certainly at an older age, she will get a lot more out of it next year than she is this year. There will always be the new math and written activities that she isn't doing yet. If it does turn out that you just can't repeat the LHFHG activities with her next year, then you could possibly do the Beyond activities 1/2 speed with both of your dc. Time will tell and when you get closer to that point, you'll have a better idea of what will work best. For now, I would enjoy the time and let her have fun joining in on the activities. :D

I too wouldn't worry overmuch about next year. I think if it were my dc I would repeat LHFHG and add in what she didn't do the previous year. It sounds like next year will be quite different even with the same program imo. HTH

I agree with what others said, because I think at these younger ages, repitition is great! Unless she strongly objected to hearing the same books read again, I would think the previous exposure to it would just really cement the material for her!

I'm so glad you are enjoying both LHTH and LHFHG with your sweeties! :D It sounds like a great year, and like each of your dc are appropriately placed. I too agree with the sage advice already given here that it's a good idea to wait and see how things develop. :D I'll add that Beyond adds quite a bit more writing, and Bigger Hearts adds even more writing and also reading. Looking down the road, since your ds is doing very well with LHFHG and will be more than ready for Beyond, I'm guessing you may not want to slow him down enough for your dd to try to catch up with him, especially in the areas of reading and writing. LHFHG is an easier guide for little ones to just listen in on and enjoy parts of, as reading and writing are not fixed skills in it already. Beyond will be much harder for her to get as much out of if she's not reading and writing fairly well or if she is younger than 6 yo. BUT, I could be wrong here too! Maybe your dd will quickly blossom with reading and writing skills, and maybe you would really enjoy doing half-speed Beyond and letting dd catch up to ds (I would not advise doing Bigger Hearts with anyone younger than a 7 yo though  ). So, this all brings me full circle to the start of this post, back to saying you really will know better after you've finished out LHTH and LHFHG! :D

Thank you all so very much for the thoughtful responses! :) Yes, repeating LHFHG with DD next year and including the "missing pieces" will probably be our course of action. I'm just truly amazed at how much they both seem to be enjoying the programs. (DS was so thrilled about drawing a truck today for his Thinking Skills - he added in another car, a traffic light, and a horn on top of the truck with sound waves coming out of it  ) And Reddy Fox is a HUGE hit! I hope she will continue to enjoy it this much next year.

Many thanks again!
