Math update....

Thank you all for you suggestions and help a couple of weeks ago when my DD was struggling with Singapore math 2A. I went back in the textbook a couple of lessons. We redid the addition with carrying and then moved on to subtraction which was what she was struggling with. I wrote problems out of the textbook for her on notebook paper. I think the visual of "borrowing a ten" in the textbook helped her understand. We also did some of the activities from Bigger plus so computer subtraction games! Today, we got back into the workbook where we left off. She sped through the page and got them all right
I told her yesterday when she started asking for help on her second problem that if she just wasn't getting it then we would go back to 1B and start over. I guess that was enough of a challenge for her since her sister is about to start 1A that she decided to buckle down and get her subtraction done! She got the whole page right yesterday too and started on her math this morning on her own before I was even ready to start school!

I am so happy for you! Good going... How wonderful that you stopped and went over it again for your daughter instead of plowing through. The activities that Carrie wrote sure do help to visualize the math and to understand the principles behind it. Sometime the kiddo's just need an extra booster... Hope today goes well too.

Thank you for sharing an update!

I'm glad to hear what you did, and how it helped. That is so helpful to others that may need ideas and encouragement too. I had to do that for my ds with subtraction and borrowing too. It surprised me how just slowing down and repeating what we'd done for a few days seemed to be enough to get him over the hump. It sounds like you found the same to be true for your dd - hooray!!!

I have had to adjust my thinking with math. I used to get frantic, thinking if I didn't do a lesson a day every single day, I'd make my dc fall behind and they might not be able to catch up. I've been trying to get better about being more flexible with the pacing of math lately. Deltagal had mentioned on another thread the importance of making sure dc understand each part of the Reviews before moving on, and I really took that to heart. Yesterday, I went through the problems my ds missed in his review again, writing the same kind of problems on paper for him to do. It was easy to see what he needed help with, and after correcting a few things he was doing wrong, the lightbulb went on for him and he was good to go. I think those few extra days will be worth it in the long run. Kuddos to you figuring that out already! It took me a bit longer.
In Christ,
Julie

Misty,
Thanks so much for sharing an update! I'm so glad that the suggestions from the wonderful ladies on this board helped.

We've had to slow down once and awhile too, especially at the beginning of each new 'A' level book. Just a few extra days and a bit of review can do wonders.
Blessings,
Carrie
