I just got my TM for LHTH and unknowningly bought an older TM (copyright 2003, even though it is in new condition). I plan on using it with my ds 4 yrs. I have the My ABC Bible Verses and was just wondering how to incorporate it. Do I just use it along with the same letter of study whenever I have a box that says Devotional Study?

I'm very excited about starting this with my ds! I think it is just what he has been needing. I love the TM so far.

Another question for anyone who has a child with allergies, particularly food allergies, has anyone modified anything in the TM to allow for that? I haven't read throught my whole TM so maybe it is a moot point, but thought I would ask anyway.

Hi, I am new, too, and have just 5 weeks of LHTH under my belt . For the ABC Bible verses you are exactly right that you just read the one for that week's letter. Every time you get to a review week, you practice the verses that you have learned so far.
We don't have food allergies so I haven't looked ahead, but so far I don't think we've done anything with food other than gluing cereal/ beans/ etc. onto letters. You could easily substitute something else if that was an issue. We actually can't buy cereal where we live, so we use small pastas or beans instead.

We have food allergies in our family, but I've found that I already have appropriate substitutes for any food related activities. This past week we needed to make a wall out of peanut butter and crackers. Since I already have allergy friendly substitutes for those things it wasn't a problem. For the letters, when it suggests gluing cereal we just use foam shapes or pompoms or some other equivalent sized craft supply.

I think that as an allergy mom I often worry far too much about making things that will be the same as what the other kids would do. I have come to realize that for our homeschool I don't need to worry so much about making it the exactly the same as what the guide says because my daughter has no idea what it says. She just loves to do the things that I give her to do without a thought towards what the book might be saying we should do. This is one situation where I've found that it just doesn't matter what others are doing because they aren't right there in front of her doing it.

What are your child's allergies? I can certainly list or pm you the food activities and what we've done instead more specifically if you'd like.

My ds avoids: gluten, soy, dairy, and many fruits and most vegetables. (It would be a very long list if I listed everything. Basically most foods, LOL)

I liked the idea of using foam shapes or pom poms. I don't usually keep those on hand but I could for future use. I think I need to just get in the habit of thinking outside the box.

I would love any tips or ideas you have to share!

Thanks, Angela. That was pretty much what I figured. I am looking at getting a copy of Small Talks About God through Amazon too. But I used the ABC Bible Verses with my eldest when she was a Ker and loved it, so def want to use it again with my middle guy.

Thanks for the idea about pasta or beans, but my ds is allergic to legumes and rice pasta is soooo expensive that I would hate to waste it on an art project.

Here's what I've done so far, we're just heading into Unit 15 next week, so that's as far as I've gotten substitution wise. I can let you know every few weeks as I come across more food related activities. If I forget just pm me and remind me.

The letter activity is sometimes writing the letter using chocolate syrup or pudding or something like that. We don't have anything like that except this ridiculously overpriced chocolate pudding I buy at an organic food store and I can't justify using it to write letters. On those days we just use ice or oil like other weeks suggest. Or I give a pan with shaving foam in it, it's cheap and so much fun! We have also had good luck with crayola model magic to make letters from like others would with playdoh. I don't know what it's made of, but we've never had a reaction to it.

U6 D3 - sugar for sand (not a food issue for us)
U8 D5 - manna, we used brown construction paper
U10 D2 - peanut butter and cracker wall with red licorice string, we used special crackers, sunflower butter and a real fruit fruit leather strip
U11 D5 - making wheat, we used rice for the grains
U12 D5 - cooking oil (not a food issue for us)
U14 D2 - items to glue in the ark, we chose to use pompoms and pretend jewels
U15 D2 - marshmallows and spaghetti or toothpicks, we used toothpicks and we are able to use jet puffed marshmallows

I have learned that a well stocked craft cupboard is a great thing. I go to the dollar store and buy small pompoms, different shaped sequin things, plastic jewels, foamy shapes, goggly eyes, glitter, cotton balls and popsicle sticks.

I have notated in my TM those ideas. I am not sure about the marshmallows, but I will work on a recipe or find a safe brand. I have time for that. We are sugar free too (forgot to mention that). I did find a recipe to make your own marshmallows with agave nectar and I will try that and see if it works. Would be great to have for the future. Nuts are not an issue but we would have to use red string and not licorice for Rahab's cord.

I have written down your suggested crafts items to have on hand and intend on adding that to my next shopping trip.
