Taking a long break?
Taking a long break?
We are currently working on week 8. My DH just took a job in another state. We are moving in less than a month.
My house is very disorganized now and there is much to do. I really want to stop HSing until after we are settled in the new house. I'm trying to at least get through this week since we will finish our adventure book. Has anyone taken such a long break? If so, was it hard to get going again?

Re: Taking a long break?
I take about a 2 month long break in the summer because we do not homeschool in June or July (sometimes mid-June through mid-august). Yes, it can be hard to get back in the groove, but you have to do what you have to do. It will probably help your sanity (and therefore, also your dc's sanity) to take the break until after you get settled in the new house.

Re: Taking a long break?
We are in a long break right now. DD1 is focusing on reading, copywork, and math... I've printed off a bunch of different things that I've made unit studies out of just to make it seem more like school to her, but it's just for fun... I wouldn't feel I had to do that. The reading, copywork, and math I just tell her how much to do and from where/what and then I check it at the end.
Of course, we just started DITHOR today, so that'll up the reading a bit, but the idea is still there
So we take a break from curriculum and stress of getting things done and just "play" school for a while.

Re: Taking a long break?
We moved in the late Spring (twice)
and found that it was just too hectic to try to continue normal homeschooling during the boxing/unboxing and resettling. We took 3 weeks off of everything and then added Math and books from the library in until I could get myself organized (another 2 weeks). It was hard to get back into the swing of things for a week or so. Nothing too bad. We did spend our first day looking back through our notebooks in review since we stopped our curriculum mid-year.
I'm not sure I could have done it any other way. Moving takes so much energy and time...and I needed to spend mommy time with the kids without being their teacher.
Congrats on hubbies new job!

I don't know what you consider to be long but the schedule that we have enjoyed the most is school Sept., Oct., Nov., off the month of Dec. School Jan., Feb., Mar., off April. School May, June, July, off Aug. Maybe you could do something like this with just differing months on and off. I think it would be fine to take off until you are settled and just make up the time sometime before Sept. next year, if that is when your school year starts. HTH

Re: Taking a long break?
We have planned this year to take off from HOD from Thanksgiving Week thru December. We will just do Math and Language Arts plus some 4H work that is due at the end of the year that we are always scrambling to get done. I am looking forward to seeing how a "planned" break during this busy time of our year will be like. I did consider how it might be getting back to our regular schedule in January but as much as my children love HOD I really feel they will like the break and be just as excited when we being again. I hope you can enjoy the excitement of moving and new things to come and when you are ready to begin full steam again I imagine you will all be ready for a routine again

What do you consider a long break?
We take off the summers, and I just know that when we start again I need to expect an adjustment period. I wouldn't take a bunch of long breaks within one year, as they can prevent dc from having enough school days to complete a school year's worth of work, and they can also interrupt the continuity of learning. However, over the course of a year, there is MUCH LEEWAY in how school can be paced out to do. This is one of the joys of homeschooling! Half-speed school is always an option too if a second break is needed, but I'm thinking you'll be just fine with one long break!
