I am going to be starting DITHOR 2/3 in January, and have to wait on purchasing the book packs until the end of February. So... I need a couple of book ideas for a Humor, Folktale and Historical Fiction, similar to those in level 2 book pack, that I can get, to hold me until I can purchase the recommended ones from HOD. Any ideas?

Thank you,
LeAnna :D

Have you read the emerging readers? If not those would be good to try. If you have read them then some of the extra ones listed at the end there would also be a good choices. When we did a humor unit last Spring, we read the other 2 Frog and Toad books that aren't included in the emerging readers. Each of them were a 5 day book and we finished out the genre with a Minnie and Moo book by Denys Cazet. Those were all available at the library. There are also many more Amelia Bedelia books than the one in the emerging readers so those would be good choices. Try checking the early reader section at the library and I think you'll find lots of choices there.

As far as Historical Fiction, there are several that come to mind, Sam the Minuteman, Sarah Whitcher's Story, The Drinking Gourd. I think all of those would qualify as historical fiction and shouldn't be too difficult. There is always the Little House books as well though you might want to stick with the Little House Adventure stories since they would be shorter and a bit easier. Again, I think you'll find quite a few that would work in the early reader section of the library.

For Folktale, I would probably look for a book of Aesop's Fables or something similar to that.

Another option is just to look in the HOD book shop. There might be some books listed for the read alouds that would be appropriate for a DITHR book that you haven't read or aren't planning on reading. There are lots of great options there. The book list that HOD sells is great too. It has lots of great suggestions. I hope that gives you a couple of ideas.

Yes, we are finishing working on the emerging readers. We have even read the optional books. Very good! We have read some of the extra chapter books listed in the back of Beyond. What I was thinking, was that I really wanted to buy the set level 2 together to save money, but I guess I could just buy them separately. Hmmm... I like the other Little House book idea. Maybe we will do that for historical fiction.:)

Thanks!

I too, wanted to be careful about choosing books that we wouldn't be reading in future guides. So, I was kind of thinking something other than what was listed.... just until I can order the whole set. :D

I understand better now. I can see how you would want to get the whole set :) Maybe you can try looking up some of the authors of some of the recommended books and see what other books they have written. That doesn't always work, but I know for instance that Robert Lawson who wrote Ben and Me did several other books in the same vain that are really good. Arnold Lobel has done a lot of great books. So that might be a way to find some other good books that wouldn't be the same as the ones you will use in later programs. :D
