I've been using this program and am really considering just doing dictation with my ds (3rd grade). The AAS has helped with his phonics and his reading but I don't necessarily see an advance in his writing/spelling?! Just wondering what your thoughts are!

I adore AAS for my daughter. I tried dictation, spelling lists, AVKO Seq Spelling, Spelling WOrkout. None of those have helped her anywhere NEAR as much as AAS. I consider it almost miraculous for her!
I think copywork and dictation are important, too. We use those daily. But I personally believe AAS is fabulous for children who don't 'get' spelling.

I WAS a devout, ardent AAS user and was using it along with dictation initially with HOD, but I eventually realized it was one more area of overkill on my part. We've been doing straight dictation for about a year and a half now and our spelling scores are going up, up, up! Dictation works. Occasionally I look up a rule in my AAS books, if my children inquire. I did revisit the AAS books for a brief period per Carrie's recommendation to supplement when one of my sons hit a wall with dictation, but he seemed to break out of his rut after about 6 weeks and we set them aside again.

Fascinating! I will try to convince myself I can just do dictation.....maybe once I finish this level of AAS. Thanks for posting!
