Antarctic Ocean??

Ok, maybe I missed something over the years. In doing oceans in Bigger with my dd this week, I saw in the lesson (History activity, Unit 1, Day 4) that one ocean was the Antarctic. Our globe and atlas maps have no such ocean. I see the Antarctic Circle. I really did not know what to say to her as she saw how confused I was. I said that maybe the Antarctic Ocean is in the circle, but don't take my word for it. Can anyone fill me in on this?

It wasn't on my map either and I was bit confused. I told my children that I only knew the 4 oceans, but surely the Antarctic Ocean was around Antarctica. We moved on. I just googled it and found this:
http://geography.about.com/od/learnabou ... hocean.htm It explains that the fifth ocean has only been acknowledged since 2000 and still not everyone acknowledges the fifth ocean. Interesting! Now that I found this I think I'll share it with my dc.

Yep, definitely depends on what book you read. Ds has already figured out that scientists can't make up their minds.

Thanks ladies! I wanted to make sure I wasn't losing my mind:)
Patty - I pretty much moved on like you did too. Thanks for the link. It is interesting.
Countrymom - You have a very smart ds! I would have to agree with him too.

It's called the Southern Ocean on my map too!
What is funny is My PS child kept telling us we were wrong on our HS map (labeling the Southern Ocean) because her new text books doesn't have it yet...
same text book company says Pluto is a planet... Science can't make up its mind!!!
