I have a question about doing the written narration under "Reading About History" in Preparing. It says that the students are supposed to orally dictate a 3-5 sentence narration, which I write on a markerboard and they copy. I do Preparing with my oldest 2, and have been having them alternate giving sentences, then they copy down their joint effort. is this the best way? I would prefer for them to each do their own, as then i could give each of them feedback, but this would take more time, and would almost necessitate sending one of them out of the room! Can anyone who's done Preparing with more than one child tell me how you handle this? Thanks.

How are they doing with written narrations? I would think after you've trained both of them to do written narrations by doing the guided lessons (say around a month or two into the plans), that you could just start your older child off by helping with the first part of it, and then have that child finish the narration independently, and then have that child read it out loud to you and discuss maybe one point of improvement. This would give the older child a good foundation for the skill first, a good start for it next, and then some independence with it. Meanwhile, you could continue to really help and guide the younger child by doing the written narrations in the more guided way they are planned in PHFHG for the rest of the year. This is assuming the older child is probably doing better with the skill - if not, then I'd keep doing the guided lessons as you are.
