Grammar Question

Post by Larissa » Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:45 pm

I am currently using LHTH, LHFHG(1st grade), and Bigger (3rd grade).

I have my 3rd grader in Rod and Staff English 3 as I am taking him through the Bigger guide. I hear chatter about Rod and Staff English among many of you - in regards to using English 7 and 8 in high school. How do you work out the English in the lower grades in order to do 7 and 8 in high school?
We are using a schedule right now that will have us completing English 3 by the end of this school year - and plan on doing English 4 next year.

If I do 1 book per year - that would have us completing 7 and 8 in 7th and 8th grade. Is that too advanced? English 3 is perfectly within the grasp of my 3rd grader right now. I haven't seen anything presented up until this point that has even challenged him. I want to be thinking this through right now - because the last thing I want to do is frustrate my child in a level that is too difficult for him.

How do you schedule those books as they get older?

It sort of answers my question - but I am still left wondering how to schedule those books. Should I only do half of English 3 this year and half next year? Or should I complete level 3 this year and split the following years up. How do you split up the younger years to make it work in the older years?

Rod and Staff 2 or 3 should be scheduled full-speed (finish the whole book in one year) with Bigger Hearts, and your choice of Rod and Staff 3 or 4 are scheduled full-speed in Preparing. By CTC on up, due to the higher Rod and Staff books becoming more complex, in addition to more writing assignments being included in the HOD guide, Rod and Staff 5 and 6 are scheduled at half-speed, so that it would take two years to complete each book following the schedule in the higher HOD guides. So at this point you are fine doing exactly what you are doing. Does that make things clearer?

Just keep doing what you are doing. We're doing the same thing using R&S 3 with Bigger this year full speed. Next year in Preparing we'll do R&S4 as scheduled in the guide (full-speed). After that, from what I understand, in CTC and RTR, we'll do R&S5 1/2 speed each of those years. I don't know how it will be scheduled in the following two years, but I know it will be scheduled to work out for us. So we just need to keep doing what we are doing, it will all be scheduled for us so no worries :D

Yes - that sounds about right. Normal speed for the next two years and half speed for 5 and 6.

Also - Patti - I am in NC as well!
