Multiplication BLUES

Post by joyfulheart » Mon Mar 17, 2008 5:21 pm

I have the Multiplication BLUES!

My son (right brained, dyslexic, dysgraphia, and other LD's) is struggling understanding and learning his multiplication tables. His teacher is really giving him a hard time about it and he's taking a hard hit on his self esteem. (cant homeschool until May :( )

We tried the music CD's (he says they make him nautious and dizzy-- dyslexia thing???)

We tried Times Tales. Not good for him. Confused him, AND it only covered a small portion of the tables. Honestly, it confused ME too.

He does NOT respond well to flash cards and rote memorization, we learned that just dealing with the alphabet and his vocabulary words.

Any products, tips, programs that work well for his learning style?

I'm desperate!!!

The Math Games book from RightStart is highly recommended for kids with learning difficulties. You can use the games book with any program. It is the same idea as using flash cards, but in a much more appealing, fun way. We have played some of the games for addition and time.....my kids love them. They actually ask to bring the games with us when we are going places. (Yes, we have played math games in the dentist office.) There is a lot of info on their website alabacus.com

I'm sure some of the other ladies will have some great ideas for you, too. I hope you find something that works, without frustration for both you and your ds!

Not sure exactly what they have but www.diannecraft.com has a lot of info on right brain stuff. I would imagine they would have something for multiplication.

have you tried showing him its is just counting by 2's or 3's or 6's ect..
and its adding groups of numbers.. so he can think of it as fast adding.

2x2 =4 count by 2's 2 times
even 2X0 =0 makes sence this way 2 counted zero times is still zero.

count by 4's or 5's show him how much he already knows.
He may be surprised. Also tell him from me I know how hard it is and some times you just have to push your way though it.

Tell him I still have to add 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 to get 42 I still don't have it memorized. I add 7+7 which equals 21 then I double it to get 42. I can do that faster than trying to remember 7 x 4 = 42. The right way is the way he can get the correct answer every time.

And for spelling here is a hint that really helped me have him make word pictures I could never spell "business" to this day I still picture the lochness monster in a bus. and I say Bus in ness is how to spell business.
