Could someone please share with me how this is used. Is every story read? Are the stories broken up into short sections to be read aloud, or is it independent reading?

I'm considering preparing for next year and I've owned and sold Hero Tales before. I felt like it was too dry and covered some pretty heavy subjects that I didn't want to cover with my kids. That's been a few years ago, and things can change over a few years. So please share with me your likes, dislikes, is the book okay for sensitive children, etc.

I'm not sure how it is used in Preparing. We did use it last year with a different program when my son was 8 and he loved it!

We did Preparing last year when my ds was 10. I consider him a very tender hearted, sensitive boy. He doesn't like hearing about sad things at all. He liked the Hero Tales books though. I think the book did a good job of pointing out that even though some horrible things happened due to them staying faithful to God, you see where God use it for good. You do it as a read aloud and therefore have room for discussion. The readings are short and we enjoyed them and didn't find them dry. The only thing we had to get use to was the the first section was an overview of the persons life and then the next sections gave more the details. He at first said "but they already told me this part". I thought it was a gentle introduction to martyrdom and persecution that Christians have faced through history. Not all the stories are sad or intense.

Is this the book that had a couple missionaries somewhere in Africa and they were about ready to get their heads lobbed off? I'm trying to remember which book I had in my head...

So the whole book is covered?

Really, it's not used until unit 14 for storytime and then not again until unit 27 - I think... Anyway, I was fine with the subjects covered. and I would have found it dry as well, but Carrie does such a nice job of making the story relate to geography and history that it makes it worthwhile. However, before you purchase it again check out your local library - mine has this book. If you just don't have the heart to read it again it will not ruin the program to skip it.... Hope that helps!
