Today was our first day with WWTB. I read the passage to my ds since I felt like he was being challenged enough with all the reading he is doing. When I finished the passage from 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, he says "wait, don't stop. I want to know what happens. This sounds like such an exciting book." Of course that fed right into the discussion about what makes great writing, but it looks like at some point we will have to read the entire book.

My ds LOVES that book! The books scheduled in HOD are great at catching my dc's attention and making them beg for more....

LOL - my ds11 said, "umm...okay, I understood a little bit of that." Perhaps we need to do some extra vocabulary with him!

WHEW, I'm glad you wrote this, because our 12yog said almost the same thing!

I was hoping we'd get the reaction that was posted first!

LOl, maybe it's 11 year olds. Mine said the story was ridiculous and started analyzing the type of fish in the story and how they have it all wrong Maybe he's more of a non-fiction man, but somehow those Hardy Boys books are totally realistic!

I agree that my son was begging for more of the story. It had him on the edge of his seat! I had him read that passage himself, but it still had the same effect. I think enjoyment of that type of literature comes from a steady diet of living books and being comfortable with a higher level of vocabulary.

I know I thoroughly enjoyed the passages in WWTB as well. Jules Verne is an amazing descriptive writer, but the passage from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is definitely not easy!
