Right program for my kids?

Post by yayadaisy » Sat Mar 15, 2008 8:55 am

Hi I am new here and have a question. I will be homeschooling my 8 and 6 yr old and have ordered Beyond for them. I want to use the same one for both. My girl is doing just great in K this year ,but my son has LD and ADHD and is at the same level reading and writting as my daugther. But I see that most of you have used it for second grade. They will be in thrid and first. I use MFW and just some workbooks for K. What are you guys thoughts on this? Should I get Bigger for my thrid grader next year?

I think so long as you take into consideration that you may need to adjust LA and math the history and bible part should be fine.

My son has LD's too, I think your plan is fine.

If he feels it is too babyish, you can always get the pack for older kids and still do beyond. But I'll let the experts give their thoughts on that one.

My only concern is that I know my son compares himself to his younger brothers, and that he's upset when he realizes his kindergarten brother is ahead of him on subects. So I have to make sure I present things to my older child in a more "grownup" fashion, so he feels he is ahead, even if he's not. Make sense? It's all in the presentation. LOL I'm trying to protect his self esteem a little.

Thanks for the info. I have five kids all together. 8,6,4,2 and almost 1. So I really wanted to do something that I could do together with the older two and I am planning on doing preschool with the younger two. Which the 4 year old is developmentaly delayed so starting K would be a bit to much form him this coming year he will be five in July. I guess I though maybe it wouldn't be enough for him but I am feeling better about it now.

Shelia,

Welcome to the boards! :D We're glad to have you here! I think your post got buried in the board.

It does sound like "Beyond.." is the best placement for your kiddos, since you wish to combine them. They are in the target range for "Beyond..." which is ages 6-8.

If you felt you needed to later, you could always bump up your son into "Bigger...", but for now I would try combining and see how your kiddos function together. We really enjoyed "Beyond..." and pray that you will too!

Blessings,
Carrie

Hi yaya daisy! I'm going to throw a new idea your way, but you can just totally ignore if it's not a possibility.

I think I remember reading in another post that your dd just finished MFW K?? My kiddos moved very easily from MFW K right into Little Hearts. It's been very nice to have more of a history focus after the MFW science focus. The phonics portion of mfw k doesn't really cover all the necessary skills to just jump right into those emergent readers, so we are finishing up the necessary phonics now, so that we will be ready for the emergent readers scheduled in Beyond.

How about doing Little Hearts with dd and keeping your ds in Beyond? It would help boost his ego and I think they would enjoy each other's storytime books together. It would give your dd a chance to be more ready for the emerging readers, or if she is just a terrific reader, she could do them with Little Hearts.

There isn't an extension pack for Beyond (I think someone mentioned that). Those don't start until Bigger, although you could add in some different books if you wanted....it would just be a little more work for you. Whereas if you just had them in different programs, it might be a little easier.

I also noticed that you have some littles coming up, so you could always re-use the Little Hearts.

Just a suggestion. Good luck with making you decisions!!
