Beyond Science is remembered!

Post by creativemommy » Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:14 pm

My son is LOVING the science in Beyond this year and had to share these stories...

Last week while doing Unit 1 he learned about ocean currents and whale blubber.

Later in afternoon (the same day we learned about the ocean currents), he was playing in the kiddie pool while it was being filled with the garden hose. He came running up to me shouting, I found a current! He had set a toy boat in front of where the hose was (under water) and observed the boat float away in the current of water from the hose. He did it again this week when he and my dd created a "whirlpool" in the pool by walking in circles and watching their toy boats go around & around in the current.

That same evening as the whirlpool, the water was also a bit chilly. My ds asked if I could bring out the "blubber" (vegetable shortening) so they could put it on their bodies to stay warm in the cold water like the whales do in the ocean.

Thanks, Carrie, for such fun science activities my ds remembers!!!

This made me smile! D I love your ds's enthusiasm, and his response to Beyond's science of "seeing science around him in the real world" and of "knowing he can understand it and apply it to his surroundings" are key goals of HOD's science... mission accomplised. You've got a little scientist on your hands already! :D :D :D

Beth,

Aren't those little minds amazing! They are always taking in more than I think they are! :D What a neat way to see that your son is really learning his science concepts.

I laughed out loud at the "covering himself in shortening" idea to stay warm in the whirlpool! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I love it Beth! :D I can totally picture your blubbery little whales, too! Did you say, "yes"???

We're loving HOD's science here, too. We were out planting a little food plot for deer in some recently bulldozed land tonight and talking hunting on the ride home. Grant, who's in CTC this year, was telling us about how Teddy Bears are named for Teddy Roosevelt because he wouldn't shoot at a bear that wasn't "fair game" in the wild. And, about a mile down the road a bobcat ran in front of us which he read about today. He was telling Dad how a male has a territory of 60 square miles...so there would be about 1300 of them in Kansas. He LOVES the HOD science, and so do I! :D

Oh yes, we would have had an oily mess if I agreed to the "blubber" on their skin.

That is awesome that he could see a bobcat! Wow! I can't wait to get into the upper guides!!!

If $ weren't such an issue, I'd order them all now to go through myself! :D
