I was wondering if you use it as is with the HOD manual or if you use the homeschoolers guide or both.

Carrie has wonderful hands-on activities in LHFHG for Early bird K 2A/2B, in Beyond for Prim math 1A/B and in Bigger for Prim. math 2A/B.

If you do not have the corresponding manual, but are sure to need it the next year, it is worth getting the next manual.

Otherwise Carrie recommends the Textbook.
If you are talking about 3A and up, I am sure someone else will chime in, since I have not yet used them.

Success!

Last year my ds was using LHFHG with an outside math program. Then we switched to Singapore 1A mid-year. I had bought the home instructors guides, not thinking I should have just purchased the Beyond guide which had Carrie's great plans for Singapore 1A&2A. My ds missed a lot of the fun activities.

The home instructor guides are okay if you want to read through them and decide what activities you're going to use to teach your dc the next day. I would suggest if you have access to the HOD guides or can buy the next year's guide (if your dc are needing the future grade level plans) then do it!
I'm sorry, we're only up to Beyond this year so I can't answer for the upper guides. Hopefully someone else can help you with that!

I will be using the hsguide for 5A/5B this year for my 4th grader who will doing Bigger with my 2nd grader. He did 4A/4B last year and we made it through, but I know the guide would have helped me out a lot. I have looked through it and it will be a big help to me this year for him.

HOD carries the Home Istructor's Guides as optional for level 5A and up. So far we've been great just using the schedule in the HOD guides and using the workbooks with the hands-on Carrie has written in the younger years, and then the textbook/workbook combo for levels 3 & 4. Next year we'll be in level 5, so we're not there yet. I know that those guides are ideas for teaching Singapore written by Sonlight. (So they're not an original part of the Singapore program.)
So, I guess to answer your question, our family is doing it as-is with HOD.

We're in 4B and haven't needed them yet.

Here are some past threads that dialogue about this:
Singapore Math – should I get the Home Instructor’s Guides or additional components?

I'd probably start without it and see how it goes. Why add more unless you need to? But that's just my thought on it.
