Singapore Earlybird Math Questions

I'm trying to figure out where to place my 6 yr old in math. She hasn't had a lot of formal math. She can count to 50, write numbers to 20, understands less than, greater than to 20, knows basic shapes. We haven't really covered time, measurement, or money. Would Earlybird math be right for her?

Also, in looking for the Earlybird US edition online, it appears to have been discontinued and replaced with the Standards edition. Is the new edition the one I would need? It has a textbook and activity book, rather than a textbook and workbook.

I can't answer about the placement, but the new edition is NOT the one used in HOD. The ones that have been discontinued online are still available through HOD.

I have read on the board before that there is a placement test on Singapore's website. You might look into that? HTH

The placement test starts at the regular 1A. So it doesn't cover the Earlybird books. But you could always have your daughter do the 1A test and see if it is about the level that she needs to start with.

I'm away from home right now so I don't have my copy of earlybird math in front of me to see the latter pages in the second workbook, but I know it starts out very basic (writing numbers 1-5). I just began Day 1 with my dd yesterday.

I didn't use earlybird with my son who did LHFHG last year as he knew his numbers, basic addition (+1, +2) and shapes. I knew earlybird would be too easy. We used Singapore 1A & 1B instead. At times we slowed down or went faster depending on his grasp of the concept. I remember that Singapore 1A begins with matching numbers to their number word (1-10/one-ten) and counting sets of objects & writing the number. Later in year, I know time and money are introduced.

I'd definitely do what the above post suggested - give her the 1A placement test to see if she can do even a little of it. You can see a few sample pages (including the first page) on CBD's website. That helped me in deciding for my son last year.

Hi! We did Earlybird 2A &2B last year and have jusy finished 1A. The concepts of time, money and measurement are just introduced in Earlybird, and revisited for a longer time in 1A & 1B. I'd start with 1A and just take your time, slow down as needed, do extra if she wants to when it's easy. If you can get the manual for Beyond, it has great, simple hands-on activities for the lessons that support the workbook very well. No textbook is needed

Thanks, everyone! You have all been so helpful in figuring this out. I think I will order both Earlybird and A1 to be safe, as I will eventually need the Earlybird for the next daughter.
