Hello ladies! I recall hearing something mentioned about commonplace books and I wondered if we would need this for Beyond. Would I use one for poetry copywork? If so, what type of book would you recommend? Thank you all for all of the helpful advice and encouragement that I've received on the HOD boards. I've read on other homeschool boards and have been shocked at how hostile/critical some of the posts/responses sound. Anyway, TIA

You won't need a "Common Place" book until Preparing. I can't tell you exactly what you'll need for notebooks in Beyond, but if you read through the introduction it should tell you what you'll need to know.

My little ones wanted the big kid common place book that the other kids had so we did one in Beyond also. I just used a composition book and they did their copywork and spelling work there as far as writing sentences etc. I had a index card file minibinder for writing the actual spelling words out each week. It worked really well for them to have a common place book with Beyond. I guess if writing space and lines are an issue you might want to find something different than a composition book but my kids did fine with it. We plan on doing the same thing for Bigger this year as well but we will also have a binder for History and Science etc as well.
It is not written into Beyond to have a common place book but it worked for us.

According to the introduction in my CTC guide, " A Common Place Book is often a bound composition book with lined pages. It provides a common place to copy anything that is timeless, memorable, or worthy of rereading." In CTC, my son will be using it for his Bible Quiet Time.
Hope that helps!
