We're finishing up the last 12 weeks for the left side of LHFHG. I recently ordered the Classic, Boy & Girl Interest books from HOD, and we started reading A Bear Called Paddington today. How many pages should I read for storytime with 1st & 2nd graders? We'll be starting Beyond after we finish LHFHG, but I didn't want to use 2 guides at once. I would like to just start fresh with Beyond and not have to skip around.

Do you read a whole chapter at once?

I don't have my guide right in front of me, but I believe you break the books down into 20 sections to read over 20 school days. So you just have to kind of thumb through the book and figure out how many pages per day that would be. (Be sure to omit pages that are just pictures.)

Whoops! For the folk tale you are only supposed to schedule it out for 10 school days, but it is 20 days for the others. Also there are questions that go along with the books in the guide, so you may want to consider buying the guide to have those handy. Just a suggestion.

It does depend on the number of pages somewhat. We started Little House in the Big Woods today. It is supposed to be 20 days for the Historical Fiction and i think most of the others. We are going to read around 11-13 pages each day. Depending on finding a good place to stop each time.
My son is in 1st grade (7 in October). He was really interested in the story.

Are you just reading the books, or are you doing the Beyond Storytime plans with them already? I am thinking that since you said you aren't using the 2 guides at once that you are just reading them, but please correct me if I'm off on that. If so, I'd just read at whatever pace you want to, considering how long your dc can listen well and how long you want to read, just being sure to finish by the end of LHFHG. Then, when you begin doing the right side of Beyond and the Storytime plans for that, you'll just need enough books for the year and will then divide the book's total page numbers by 20 and read that number of pages each day (divide by 10 for folk tale though as a pp said so wisely). For right now, you can certainly work toward your dc being able to listen to reading for about 10-15 minutes, as that's about the amount of time it takes to read for Storytime with the Beyond books. You can also ask them maybe 3 comprehension questions to answer orally; have them orally share 1 thing that happened at the beginning, 1 in the middle, and 1 in the end of the daily reading; or ask them to share a very short (like 3 sentences telling anything about the reading) oral narration to grow into the Storytime of Beyond. HTH!

So does the Beyond guide give you specific questions to ask for EVERY book from the Boy, Girl & Classic selections, depending on what you choose??? I'm still trying to figure this all out.

No, it gives general questions that you could use with any books.

MamaPajama is right that Storytime follow-ups are general and can be used with any book that matches the genre. Many important skills are taught in the Storytime box. Each unit includes the following reading activities in coordination with the
read-aloud assignments:
*Day 1: introduce and study different types of literature
*Day 2: model narration to foster comprehension
*Day 3: identify and analyze a different story element for each genre
*Day 4: relate personally to one Godly character trait, compare
Biblical and book characters, and select one area to improve
*Day 5: practice narration by retelling the story in a variety of ways

So, you can see the skills that are learned through the Storytime plans go deeper. HTH!
