We will be using R & S English with two of our boys this coming year. I know that many here do some of the work orally, but could you share more specific guidelines with me? For example, do you do just the oral review and then assign a few written problems? Or do you do some of the intended written problems orally? I've also heard that some parents assign odds or evens?

Thoughts greatly appreciated,

I did R&S English 2 with my dd in Bigger last year and we did it all orally. Even when the student book called for her to write her answers, I just had her tell them to me. It worked very well and she still learned a lot. HTH!

We do all of the intended written problems...but do 1/2 to 2/3 of them orally. If it's something that needs to be seen, I did the writing on a marker board so he still got the benefit of that. I almost always had him do some from each section still. Once we were in Level 3 and diagramming - I saved more of those for him to do on paper as that's something more beneficial to write than whether to use was or were in a sentence. :D

We so almost all of it orally as well. I save a couple from each section for her to write. If there is a worksheet, then we do the whole lesson orally and she does the worksheet on her own. It's worked wonderfully!

Yikes! I suddenly feel so mean! My ds was in level 3 last year and I had him do it exactly like the book said. He wrote everything that had to be written and he did not like that of course. However, I mostly did it because he needs a lot of spelling help and I thought that the extra writing would be good for that. Plus, then I would have written work to save for my records.

So, if you already have a good speller I would think orally would be fine, I just had him write everything to try and help his spelling issues. However, it did take MUCH longer that way! We spent a good 45 min. each day on R&S alone. :? ugh.

However, with CTC this next year for him and BLHFHG for my dd, I may have to do more of it orally to move the day along.

Hope this helped!
Michelle :D
