I read a while back on the boards, that HOD no longer had any of the Book Projects to Send Home books. They have been out of print for a while now, and I was wondering if Carrie has come up with any replacements for those books?

I have two boys that will be starting the DITHR reading program early in August and I know they would be more prone to pick actual hands-on projects verses some of the other options in the book. I just thought I would ask and see if anyone knows if/when Carrie has made any recommendations for another book to use for it. I will be sending in my final book order soon, before school starts in Aug., and was hoping to get that as well . . . . .if I can, that is!

I am loving HOD more and more as I make preparations to start school next month, and am greatly looking forward to this program too! I just want to be as prepared as I can be. Thanks for any help!

The note on the side of this page... http://www.heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-packages.php ...says that it will be mid-August before Carrie picks a replacement for those. I'm sure this is because right now she's working LONG hours finishing writing the new guide, editing it, and putting the finishing touches on it to get it mailed out on August 1 to those getting ready to use it this year.

Some of the character quality and "group" projects are pretty hands-on, too. I know that we had a great time with the "brotherly love" project to go along with the Fantasy genre. Grant and his little brother and sister had a blast with this. They LOVED that he was committing to spend time all week doing whatever they wanted to do for a set amount of time. (And the prize at the end was going to the pond dove-hunting as a family! We ALL had fun!)

We did the "group" project for folk tale. Grant planned it, and then enlisted his brother & sister to play roles (keeping in mind that they're younger and needed a pretty easy scene to act out). He costumed (& decorated ) them. Dad was the narrator and I was the camera-woman.


We did a "group" project for mystery, too, I believe. It was a radio drama for the book, and Grant and his Dad were the voices of the characters while the little 2 and I handled the sound effects.

So, for August, you could maybe glance through the genres and pick one that has a more hands-on type project idea that your child would enjoy and just start there. Sometimes I've let Grant pick the project, and sometimes I've told him what he's doing for the project. (So far he has yet to dislike any of them. They're all FUN ways to wrap up the learning! )

Okay, so I have to apologize to Carrie: I am so sorry for posting this question and making you feel more pressure to get things done quicker than you're able. SORRY!

I posted this question having "looked through" the DITHR book and not really having "studied" how it all works together. I did that last night and was up til 1am making a plan for the whole year on what we'll do for each kickoff day and for each project. I realized that I don't need the book projects book at all! This program is so well designed that I don't need it. There are so many other options in the book for projects and they (as usual with HOD), are very rich, wholesome, wonderful projects!

I was a little apprehensive about this program because it was so different than anything I've tried before (we are coming to HOD from a totally textbook way of schooling ). But, now that I've really dug deep and got to "know" the program, I absolutely LOVE it!!! I am so excited to start this part of our studies, just as much as our other guides! Thank you, thank you, HOD for enriching every part of our school day!

Also, thank you Kathleen for all the great info and encouragement! And I just loved those cute pics of your kids! Thanks for sharing how HOD looks in your home!

Kathleeen-Thank you for sharing your foto's with us, how encouraging. I have DITHOR on hold while in recovery from surgery, but I am looking forward to using one of these fun activities for our next genre
