I am starting to put together my list of supplies for Preparing, and I am a bit confused about what is needed for the Independent History Study. It is mentioned that you can use a sketchbook with 1/2 blank and 1/2 lined pages. Does that mean that the page includes 1/2 blank space and 1/2 lines, or is this referring to the whole sketchbook? Do they make this kind of book or do you jerry-rig it yourself? For those of you who have or are currently using Preparing, what did you use and find effective? We have been using sketchbooks in Bigger and they meet our needs for space and convenience quite well, but I want to understand what is needed here. Thank you!

These sketchbooks are available for purchase, and the top half is blank while the bottom half has lines for writing...throughout the entire sketchbook. Miller Pads and Paper has them I think, but ohter companies must sell them as well. You could do a search online.

We however, did not purchase a sketchbook. We ended up using blank printer paper and my dc would draw their picture then write whatever was necessary at the bottom of the page. Of course, you could also have them write at the top and draw toward the bottom. We did this for science as well. For us it just made more sense to do it this way b/c we have printer paper available all the time for our printer and for when the kids draw on their own. Hope that helps.....

They are talking about per page. If you have Word it is very easy to create. I created one, because my dd needed help on writing vs drawing space. She had a huge picture and no space for writing. I just drew a text box then below the box, made lines. Very simple if you need it.

When we did the independent history with the Draw & Write book, my son used a whole blank piece of white paper for his drawing. Then he used some lined paper to write on for the days he was copying in cursive. We just put these next to each other in the sheet protectors in a binder.

For the science notebooking (and previous year's history notebooking), we used a blank piece of paper and he did the drawing and writing all on the same page.

Hi Kimi! All of these are good ideas! This is one of the many things I enjoy about HOD - there are different ways to personalize work, so some of our dc will do it one way, and others will do it another. It's neat that their products have their stamp of personality on them. We used a combination of things to do the Independent History box of PHFHG. I had fun looking back at those pictures.
