Phil. 2 CD? But We Use KJV!

Post by momtofive » Wed Jun 30, 2010 10:12 am

I have been wondering for a while now, if I should get my son the Phil. 2 CD that accompanies the CTC program? At first I thought yes, because it would help him learn. Then, I thought no because it is based on the NIV. We use the KJV, and don't want to confuse him with different wording than what he reads from his own Bible. My husband thinks that it wouldn't be a big deal to just leave out the CD and continue on with the memorization. I agree with him, but don't want to make the program lacking in any way. I just love the CTC program he'll be doing this coming year! :D It looks so good and I want him to enjoy every part of it to the fullest, but don't want him to be confused by versions either! If anyone can shed a little light on this for me, I'd appreciate it! :D

We also use the KJV, so we have this "problem" too! Curious to see what others' input is on this topic!

I didn't purchase the CD for the same reason (we use NKJV). I think this is a judgment call you have to make. I do use the Steve Green CD's for Little Hearts even though they are not necessarily NKJV, but I feel like this is different. In LHFHG they are memorizing one verse at a time from different places and more importantly I really want him to grasp the concept/principle that is being taught in the verse. That's more important to me than the version of the Bible at that age. My children doing CTC are older and they are memorizing a whole chapter of Scripture, and in that case, I would like them to learn it in NKJV.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. They will still be learning God's Word. You just have to decide which direction you have peace with.

I will run into the same thing. Unfortunately, there is not much music where the KJV verses are put to song. I will be doing LHFHG and, although I like Steve Green's music, for memorization I will use KJV. I don't think one verse at a time will be a problem even if we listen to the music. I do have some CDs with individual KJV verses set to music that I purchased from Bible Truth Music. Those are good for young children. When I come to your situation, I will not purchase the CD mentioned. I will probably use a CD I recently purchased that has the KJV Bible being read. It's not music, but maybe listening to someone else saying it would be helpful. The voice is interesting on the one I have. HTH

Lisa! SO glad you asked this question, because I was thinking of asking the same thing. We have the same "issue" here, and I hate to miss the CD, but we use KJV, too. I was wondering if there was a similar resource based on the KJV instead?

We do most of our memorizing from NKJV here too. We loved the Psalms CD last year, even though it was KJV and a little different from the NKJV! :D This coming year, I think I'll have Grant use NIV to memorize Phil. 2, because we do love to use the music with it. :D You could easily skip it though if you wanted to. Grant's Bible is actually ESV - we got that version so that he can follow along with our Pastor more easily in church as that is what he's preaching from.

It hasn't been confusing at all in our house to talk about the different versions of the Bible. We just talked about how the Bible was written in the language that the people spoke whom God used to write down His Word. The OT is originally Hebrew and the NT Greek. We don't speak either of those languages (or Latin...which was the only acceptable version to be read in churches long ago). So, we're very thankful God used men to translate His Word into English so that we can read it! People used to speak like the KJV reads...and now some of those words are a little more difficult to understand as we don't speak that way anymore. Our Pastor recently spent a SS class talking with the 3rd and 4th graders at our church about the different versions of the Bible and how we know if the translation is reliable. There are some big thinkers (and talkers) in that group...and they really wanted to know if they all really have God's Word since their verses read differently when they're reading aloud in class. (I'm quite sure they may understand some of this better than their parents now. )

You will be fine to either use or skip the CD based on what your family would like to do. (I'm looking forward to breaking it out though, as the HOD scripture CD's are favorites of ours to sing along to in the van when the school year is over! :D )

I do know this is a very personal decision, and that is why HOD always includes Scripture references for the Bible. :D We use both the NIV and the KJV in our home, but my dc's Bibles are the NIV right now. We have always used the music within HOD from year to year. We looked at the music as a way to praise the Lord! :D We love to sing them, usually together. They are often a huge help in memorizing, even if words differ somewhat from their Bibles, they still use the song as a memory aid. They memorize the verses as they are written in their Bible, but even if the song's words are slightly different, they still use the song to help overall. Only you can know what is the right choice for your family here. In our home, we have loved singing praise to the Lord each day through our HOD music! It sets the tone for a day focused on glorifying the Lord, and it makes our homeschooling "atmosphere" (as they say  ) happy. :D If not used for memorization, it can still be used for praise - similar to listening to Christian music on CD's or the radio! Music is one way to draw us nearer to the Lord, and it's also what repeats in our heads throughout the day. Those are just a few reasons why we use it! :D HTH as you consider what's right for your family.

I have been thinking a lot on this topic lately. We have purchased quite a few cds for listening to in the car and at home, over the years. We have a 45 min. drive to church and really to anywhere else, and enjoy having quality christian music for our children to listen to (as well as us too! :D ) Many of them include praise and worship songs, songs that tell a story, and songs/stories that teach valuable lessons. Those cd's do not portray a word for word presentation of the Bible, but we feel that these resources are very good at pointing our children to Christ. This really wouldn't be any different. At the end of the day, it is giving honor and praise musically to our Lord! :D

My son could use this cd with his Bible studies and reap huge rewards. Even if he didn't use it for school, we could all still enjoy Christ honoring music! :D So thank you so much ladies for helping me with this decision. Now to order it! (I was hoping to just include it in on my Rainbow Resource order, because that is the only school order that is left to make. However, I cannot find this cd anywhere! I am asuming I should just order it from HOD. I was just hoping to get it in, on another order, and save shipping! What a cheapie! )

Thanks so much to those who took time to respond!!!

In Christ,

Lisa
