Trying to decide...

Post by shaffer96 » Wed Jun 23, 2010 2:40 pm

I am trying to decide what to do with my little guy this Fall. He will be turning 3 in November. I will be doing LHFHG with my Kindergartener and I know he will want to do school as well. If I do LHTH with him this coming year, then what do I do with him next year and the year after that before he starts Kindergarten? Since he has a late birthday he will not be ready for Kindergarten until 2013. Would it be better to do LHTH with him next year and just do other things with him this year? LHTH looks like so much fun! Even if I spread it out over 2 years, then there would still be a year left before he started LHFHG. Any advice would be great!

I started my just-turned 3 yr old in LHTH last fall and we will finish this fall. I didn't have a "for sure" plan in place, but I knew he needed something. As it turns out he has grown so much in the last few months. We are going to fill in for 26 weeks (1 week for each letter to cement lowercase) with repeating some LHTH activities, especially the art activities, Explode the Code, and Handwriting without Tears. I'll probably just get a preschool book to continue pre-math activities. I believe by then he will be ready to start LHFHG at 1/2 speed. If I am computing correctly, that type of plan could take you to age 6 or pretty close. Or, you could do LHTH now at 1/2 speed. The beauty of HOD is there are many options.

my son will turn 7 in October 2010 .a late b-day as well. we did LHTH when he was close to 3.5 to almost 4.5. i had a baby in feb '08 so we took a break til the following August and then started LHFHG half-speed . we did the right side and added our own science as we wanted and some Bible study. then this past year '09 -'10 we did the Left side of LHFHG along with continuing at his level of math and reading (currently in middle of Emerging readers) and added some more Thornton Burgess books for storytime and did our own handwriting/copywork.
Next year we will do Beyond for 1st grade with whatever level of math and reading he is at.
Hope that helps

My little one couldn't wait to start LHTH, even though I was going to try to wait. So, we started it half-speed when he was almost 3 yo. It was a big hit, and ended up being a huge help to me as he was so happy after having his "mommy time", that he cheerfully played a good portion of time after it. Here's a post where I explained how we did this:

We are on summer break now, but we'll pick up where we left off after the summer and continue half-speed until we finish. He should be done about when he is 5 yo, and then we'll start LHFHG half-speed with the K options. We did this with my middle ds and enjoyed that pacing very much. HTH as you consider what to do! :D
