Should I ditch SWR and go with HOD recommendations?

I have been trying to implement SWR, but it is slow going. I was drawn to the program because I like how it explains why things are spelled the way they are. It is neat to see my dd pointing out the phonograms she is learning when she sees them in a word. But, I just don't know if I should continue on or switch to what is recommended in HOD.

I can spell fairly well, but I never understood why things were spelled or pronounced the way they are. Those are things I am now learning with SWR. I want to give that to my children and don't know how to do it with a more simple approach. I want simple though. With 5 children, and possibly more in the future, I NEED simple

Hi Terri,

I would never tell you to ditch something, but if it's not going the way you had wanted it too I would prayerfully consider using HOD's recommendation. Especially since you don't have to buy anything special or fancy.

I've never used SWR but have studied it a bit. I've also never used The Reading Lesson or Reading Made Easy....soooo....all you ladies who have used these help. Are the "rules" that explain the why's to spelling and phonics included in these??

I personally use Phonics Pathways. It's an all-in-one phonics/spelling program that teaches all the rules as well as exceptions to the rules. I was looking for something to help my ds with vision and reading issues and it's working for us.

I did not find a list of spelling rules in RME; I have no experience with The Reading Lesson. RME does include a list of sight words that will be used with a word worm. I think maybe because it's a reading program, not necessarily a spelling program, that may be why rules are not included. In the Beyond...manual, the spelling words are listed by 'families', as in long 'o' with silent final 'e', words with 'er' as in 'her', words with final 'y' that sounds like 'e' as in 'baby', etc. If you want an actual list of all the spelling rules, you can visit www.donnayoung.org/english/sp/rules.htm for a free printable list. You could also visit http://www.mcpclan.us/toolbox/learning/ ... /rules.htm to access more free spelling tools. Hope it's okay to list those here.
