My oldest son seems to easily grasp the concepts in Singapore and has no problem with the workbook,as we're moving through. However, when we get to the reviews and he needs to recall how to solve a multitude of problems he goes blank. I'm wondering what to do? We're at the end of 5B and he's been doing a review in the textbook each day and can remember very little about how to solve the problems. What should I do at this point? Secondly, he FREQUENTLY makes computation errors. It is obvious when you look at the work that he "knew" the process, but his answer is incorrect. What should I do?

I am very interested in a reply as I am having exactly the same issue with my daughter. She is using 4A and does great on daily work, then seems to freeze up on a practice page. I wonder if the "multitude of problems" is intimidating her?

Using any math curriculum I have to review, review, and review with my oldest. Even at 15!! Sometimes I did lessons at half speed with him and my third son. One lesson over 2 days time. It might really help you!!

We found that because Singapore uses so many different functions in a single word problem it is like the kiddos are having to think algebraically already in 4A on up and for sure by 5B. We do look back at the examples that are similar in the Singapore textbooks for help when my son hits a roadblock. It also helps to check the Home Instructor's Guide from 5A on up for teaching tips when the kiddos hit a tough spot.

Singapore is just a whole different way of doing math, and each problem is a fresh application requiring deep thinking. Since kiddos are thinking so hard through the process, they sometimes make computation errors (even though they know how to compute). Honestly, its a judgment call as to whether your son really isn't accurate in his computation and would benefit from some review in computation, or whether it's the difficulty of the problems that is causing simple mistakes in computation.

You may wish to check out Math Essentials to do at the end of 6B as a thorough review before heading into algebra, or for use a couple of times a week before then if needed for computation review purposes.

I did a google search for Math Essentials and found several different programs. I would love a link or more specific info on this. My kids came into HOD too late for Singapore. I desperately need to figure out whether or not my kids are on the right track with math.

Are they the Mastering Essential Math Skills books by Richard W. Fisher? Or have I got it completely wrong?!

Bump. The crazy planner part of my brain is itching for an answer to this.
