Do we need to master counting by 5's in Earlybird?

Post by countrymom » Tue Jun 15, 2010 7:46 pm

So we have hit our first hiccup in math - counting by 5's. DS is finishing kinder earlybird math and although he can count by 10's no problem, he is having difficulty mastering counting by 5's. It does not help that he leans towards being a perfectionist and cannot handle it when he does not know how to do something, thus we had a little meltdown tonight :( . I am going to expound on the activities, but I am wondering how much I should push it now? Will we get this again? I don't remember counting by 5's in kindergarten. Thanks for any input.

I haven't finished Earlybird yet, but my DD1 started with Singapore 1A/B and I'm not sure she still has counting by 5's mastered and we are almost through with those. It definitely hasn't hurt her to not know it.... She can count by 5's when she's looking at a clock, but if we just are counting by 5's she messes up occasionally.

So I'm going to say no, it doesn't matter if they've mastered it :)

You don't need to worry about mastery of this topic in EB math. It will come up again in other levels. My dc have done well with skip counting songs and that has helped them to remember how to do it, although we do have to "sing" the song. There are many different options out there so you can check your local book store, or do a google search for skip counting songs.

Thanks everyone, we still did not get it tonight so we are going to move on and avoid unnecessary frustration for now. I might look for some of those songs.
