Singapore Math and LHFHG

Post by CindyK » Mon Jun 14, 2010 7:07 pm

Just wondering if I use LHFHG with my 1st grader and also use Singapore Math 1A & 1B do the math activities listed in LHFHG correspond with 1A & 1B or does it only correspond with the Kindergarten Math. I read where there is a schedule in the appendix for 1A & 1B but wasn't sure if the math activities would be there or not.

Thanks for your help!

I don't know if they are meant for K or 1st or both, but we do both activities. We are using LHFHG for 1st grade. :D

The schedule for 1A and B is in the appendix of LHFHG, and the activities in the plans are for the K math. In order to get the activities for 1A/B, you'd need to get the Beyond guide for that. Then, when you do Beyond, you already have the guide, and you use the Bigger guide for the math activities for 2A/B. And again, you'd already have the guide for Bigger when you get there..there are no activities for 3A and up, so you would no longer need two guides after 2B. :D

Thanks for your help! Do you see the math activities as being needful to complete the 1A &1B?

I think the math activities help so much! The really add a lot to the lesson and help to cement the concepts for the kids. Plus, they're just a lot of fun! Definitely worth it, in my opinion.

Another BIG happy vote for Carrie's hands-on actvities!! :D I would definitely get the Beyond guide to do them! You'll need to either purchase the Singapore textbooks or put that $18 towards the Beyond guide, which you'll be needing the following year anyway. So, it makes sense financially as well as for better learning in my opinion. I think that using the hands-on activities while they're younger really helps the concepts to make sense then...and in the future as they have that foundation to fall back on when they're picturing things more abstractly in the older years.

I just wanted to second that we enjoyed the hands-on math as well. I felt like it was just the right amount of time to be doing hands-on activities, and then when my ds got to 3A/3B, he was ready to let go of them. I think he was able to visualize them at that point, and then the mental math of Singapore kicked in even more. :D

So are the hands on activities the same as in the singapore textbooks or are they written by Carrie? I may be able to borrow the Singapore textbooks. Otherwise I will try to stretch the budget to get the next guide
Beyond ds 2nd grade and dd 4th grade (with LA portions of bigger)
CTC dd 7th grade

They are written by Carrie, as far as I understand. She even sometimes has activities of things to do that don't necessarily have a Singapore page that go with them.

Carrie has written all of the hands-on activities themselves. As the pp said, there are days that have only the hands-on activities in the plans. We found it worth it to have the next guide for the hands-on activities. Though it is not 100% necessary, I wanted a very solid foundation of math from start to finish for our dc, and doing all of the HOD plans (including the hands-on), has given that to our dc. :D However, you'll know what fits your goals the best. :)
