Bigger science - how to make a spark?

On Unit 8 Day 5, for the science experiment, we are trying to create sparks in a dark room. Try as we might, we can't make any! In addition to the directions in the guide, we have tried a number of different items and ways to make a spark, with no luck. Is there something wrong with our doorknobs or something? They are the dark iron-looking kind, maybe the coating they put on them interferes? Anyway, I feel really silly

but wondering if anyone else had trouble and what you did about it?
Thanks!!

Hi there,
I haven't done Bigger yet, but we were talking about electricity today with my children and I just googled it and this is what I found:

Hope this helps a bit although it is not exactly what you are looking for.

It may be the time of year and the level of humidity in the air. It worked well for us, but that was back during the late fall when the air was dry. Hmmm....gotta run, but hopefully someone will have another idea.

This past thread may be of some help (and give you a smile too). Link:

Although once you start the sparks flying, your kiddos won't want to stop!
Blessings,
