How doable is it to do Preparing, CTC, and Beyond?

I thought that my 2nd child ds (will be in 4th grade) would probably do better in Bigger this next year after not doing so well in Preparing last year (we quit after week 8-9)but after going over the placement chart and the samples I'm thinking that this year he fits better into Preparing. There is just not enough writing in Bigger for him unless I were to add quite a bit, and I think he needs to do more reading on his own, but some of the books in the extension package I know would be over his head. It seems that the independent readers for Preparing would be easier for him to read than some of those books in Bigger's extension package. So, to my question, has anyone tried doing these 3 particular programs simultaneously? Would this be to hard to do? Just do not know.. How long is a day in Beyond?

Hi playschool! I honestly think if your ds fits best in PHFHG you should do that. I wonder if you could start it out half-speed? Maybe ease into it for awhile, to see if the half-speed pace would be good for longer, of if ds was ready for full-speed? Doing the independent readers from PHFHG would be fine. In fact, we loved the plans for these, and it would be tough to miss out on them. PHFHG took about 4 hours. CTC about 4 hours or a tad more. Beyond about 2 1/2 hours. I am wondering you could do PHFHG with your older 2 dc though? Maybe with your oldest doing the extensions? I am not clear on this, but I'm thinking your oldest didn't do PHFHG yet. Please let me know if I am wrong! :D

In Christ,
Julie

Julie, My older dd did do Preparing while we used it for the 8 weeks or so with the extensions. I just became frustrated because ds was just letting my older dd answer all of the questions and there were times we had to wait for him to get his stuff done (it took him much longer) before we could go on. We ended up just stopping altogether and each of them read out of a history textbook on their own and read books dealing with history from the library. At this point, she would fit better into CTC with her skills and also she will be in 7th grade in the fall. That is low-down on the situation. I ended up selling my Preparing set and now wish I hadn't. Oh well, you live and learn.
