o.k. a recent post has got me wondering now.. is my son going to need more phonics?
He is reading great in the emerging readers.
We went through the Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lesssons.
This year i had him to the Phonics Builder book for 1st grade and next year I plan on having him do the one for 2nd grade.
I am pretty sure Teach Your Child.. . covers everything.

Hi Jenntracy,
I'm thinking that if a child is reading well in the ERS, you probably do not need further phonics instruction, except on an "as necessary" basis. In other words, if there is a particular sound pattern the child doesn't understand, teach that. And also, you can view your spelling lessons/practice as somewhat working on phonics rules, too. In using the spelling lists in the guides, that gives you opportunity to discuss any rules being used. Also, I've used Explode the Code as a supplement myself, but I've heard of a Reading Specialist in our area saying that if our kids are reading well, there's no need to go through all those ETC books. (I think this is what she meant!) So for my dd, who is a good reader, I've pretty much dropped it. For my guy who is still trying to solidify his skills, I use ETC for some extra practice.
I hope that makes sense! And speaking of reading, I need to go work with my little guys!

Hi Jenn!
My ds went through 100 Easy Lessons, too. I think in the very back of the book (I'm trying to do this from memory when I read it in the fall) it mentions possible further phonics instruction of some "rules" which I why I ordered Phonics Pathway for my ds to work through. He's not a fan of the word lists, so we talk about each "rule" and then read a few examples. He keeps telling me "I know that, Mom!"
Yes, 100 Easy Lessons does a great job of the foundation and then the quirky words/rules we cover in PP.

I agree. If he can read the ER well, he is good to go.

100 Easy lessons stops at 2nd grade level. I would at least go through phonics up to 4th grade level, which is where Ordinary Parents Guide leaves off. I would also be sure to include syllabication, which can be found at the end of the page here:
http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20R...owtotutor.html I am continuing phonics until it is all covered. I feel like it is the most important foundation I can give my child and that is one of the reasons I homeschool. Webster's Speller goes through 12th grade level. All About Spelling and Phonics Road do as well.
If you want to quickly compare how much you have already covered you can see all of the phonograms here:
