BEYOND-LHFHG - "Mystery" Question

in unit 18.

[units take more than a week for us as we only do BeyondLHFHG three days a week. Friday we have co-op and Wednesday we have CBS in the AM].

We read Keys to the Treasure... WAY TOO QUICKLY. But the boys loved it.
We could not get into Ginger Pye. Even on audio tape. It was too verbose for me. :oops:
Going to start Phoebe and the General tomorrow.
It looks like another short book. :S

Any other suggestions for Mystery? Pretty please.

The Railway Children is a good book, but will require a bit of explanation. I just picked up Footprints in the Barn a few months ago, but haven't read it yet.

On my very next order, I plan to get Carrie's book selection book for this very reason....I always need help choosing!!

We just started Keys to the Treasure. There are other Bill, Liza, and Jed mysteries, maybe that would be an option. What about a Boxcar Children mystery?

My boys love the encyclopedia brown books.
My older boy read "Detectives in Togas" but that was definitely a big boy read-pretty involved language, plot, etc. But it would be a great read aloud!

How about the older Hardy boys? I picked up a newer one and it was certainly not what I remembered!! drugs, guns...ick! but we have a whole bunch of the older ones from a library sale. Pretty good reading in the older ones.
We also have a slew of scooby doo books, but those are on my twaddle shelf. :lol:
How about "From the Mixed up files of mrs. basil e frankweiler" ? We loved that book.

Oh! Nate the Great!! WE love, love, love that one!!!

I am going to check my library right now!! Phoebe won't last long enough!

And I need to find that book on book selections!
I am so conservative when it comes to what my kids may read. That is one of the biggest comforts I have had this year. I only pre-read the first three books that we did with this program and I was so pleased. Now I don't feel I have to preread them! THANKS CARRIE! ♥ ♥

You sound just like us. CBS on Thursday mornings, Coop on Fridays.... We've only made it Unit 9 so far, so I don't have any suggestions.

Okay, I don't know if this really qualifies for mystery, but I think it might. Hank the Cowdog is a series, and my son (10) loves the books. They are written from "Hank's" perspective and they made my son laugh out loud. Even if they are not considered mystery, I would recommend them for your sons. Do make sure you read through them first. I think they should be okay, beause they were recommended to me by a Christian lady, but I'm :oops: embarrassed to say I did not pre-read them. So, I can't guarantee there isn't something you may not like. Definitely check them out, though.

The Hank the Cowdog books are good, but do use some language that we don't allow in our house, sooo....I used them as read-alouds and edited. It worked great. My kids would laugh out loud also....think Barney Fife as a cowdog. :wink: Just giving you a heads up in case you don't like "slang".

You ladies are giving some great suggestions! I'd forgotten how much we loved The Boxcar Children.

we like boxcar children #1 is an adventure story more than a mystery I like the early ones better than the newers ones

momof2n2,

Mystery is absolutely one of the toughest genres to find appropriate books for! The other Liza, Bill, and Jed books each require some editing, so we didn't put them in our guides (disrespectful conversation among the siblings mainly).

The Hank the Cowdog books are fun, but do need editing as well when being read-aloud. Encyclopedia Brown books are pretty safe overall.

Concord Cunningham Scripture Sleuth books are wonderful! We use the first one as a read-aloud for mystery in "Bigger...", but it is a series. Here's the link for that:
