Choosing Rd Alouds For Bigger When One Child is LD

Post by mrsrandolph » Sun May 02, 2010 8:18 pm

My 6 & 7 year olds will be doing Bigger together. They will be 7 & 8. The younger of the 2 has some mild learning disabilities. I am having trouble choosing read alouds because of this. I have considered choosing books from each genre from the Beyond List again to use with Bigger. How much more complicated are the plots in the read alouds in Bigger compared to those for Beyond?

Just to let you know how he did with some of "Beyonds" Read Alouds...We read Helen Keller (easy for my LD child to follow with little explanation), A Lion To Guard Us (he loved it and required some explanation), Sarah Witcher's Story (loved it and required some explanation), A Cricket In Time Square (ATE IT UP with little explanation), Ginger Pye (required a LOT of explanation and he had trouble hanging in there)

So I would love to know what some of the "easier to follow" books on Bigger's list are or some ones to avoid for the sake of complication, or if you think I should stick with the Beyond list even in the "Bigger" Guide. Thanks!

I cannot remember if you have boys or girls, so you may take that into consideration - though we've found this not to be such a big deal until about fourth or fifth grade or so, and even then, some books just go well for both boys and girls. I'd consider these books the easier of the books contained in the Bigger packs...
Biography: either "George Rogers Clark" or "Phillis Wheatley"
Adventure: "Snow Treasure" or otherwise "Come on Sea Biscuit!"
Historical Fiction: "Farmer Boy" or else choose one from Beyond's selections
Fantasy: not sure here, I'd base it on child's interest, they are all good and close to the same level
Mystery: "Encyclopedia Brown" or "Scripture Sleuth" (I'd say "Scripture Sleuth" is easier)
Nonfiction: "Balto and the Great Race" or "If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island" (both quite easy)
Humor: "Homer Price" or "By the Great Horn Spoon"
Realistic Fiction: you may want to choose one from Beyond's selections
Folk Tales: "More Tales from Grandma's Attic" or "The Whipping Boy"

This is just of the top of my head, and I am basing these suggestions not only on general reading level, but also on the length of the book, and the size of the font, as well as what I can remember about the dialect. All of the books are wonderful, so you'll be just fine with any, but maybe this will help narrow it down some. :D HTH!
