OT-- about words; Latin? Greek?

Post by kvmck » Sun May 02, 2010 5:06 pm

My dd, who is 8, LOVES words. She is fascinated by them and will daily ask me "where did such-and-such word come from" or "why do we call such-and-such this instead of that" and so on. Not only do I not know the answers to her questions, but quite frankly, I don't care to know the answers to her questions! I have never had much interest in learning about language, words, root words, etc.... but I would like to help her to develop her interest. I have NO idea how best to do this. We are not currently doing any kind of foreign language, although we were planning to buy Rosetta stone Spanish in the next few years and my husband would like the kids to have a knowledge of latin as well. Latin and/or Greek seems to be something by dd would enjoy, but how do I teach this to an 8 year old? Any ideas?

A friend of mine is doing Prima Latina with her two girls (8 and 11) and she really loves it. I plan to start it with my kids when they are in 2nd grade.

My ds7 asks similar questions and we recently found a book in our local library about word origins and such.
If you have a good library in your area that is a good (and free!) place to start.

I am hoping to catch some of the more experienced mothers comments on this topic as I would like to add Latin at some point as well. :)

I just bought "English from the Roots Up" since my DH felt very strongly that learning some of the root words in Latin and Greek would help our kids reading abilities and well as comprehension. I have yet to use it, but it looks like it will be able to address many common words in level one. I liked this program because we can use it at our own pace and it's practical info plus the price was right.
