I am planning on purchasing the R TO R books in July. I am getting my list of things I need together and am wondering if I need to purchase both the independent readers as well as the read alouds. I will be teaching both an 10 and 12 with this curriculum. My younger is still going through phonics as she is dyslexic so the read alouds will be used. My older will also sit in on these as he loves to be read to. With that said do I need to purchase the package for older children as well so he can read on his own. I thought about using some of those books along with drawn into the heart. I do not want him to feel like he is rereading something he already heard from me though. Any thoughts would be great.

The Basic Package within RTR is meant to be read-aloud by the parent to the student, unless you are already doing a Storytime in a different HOD guide with other children you may have, and you would instead like your older child to listen in to that storytime. If that is the case, then your children in RTR could either read the Basic Package on their own, or you could omit it.
The Basic Package is intendend to add a fuller picture to the history content in the guide. The Basic Package readings are typically kept purposefully shorter, since the parent is mainly scheduled to be reading those aloud. The books in that package range from easier to more difficult, depending on the best book content-wise to fill out the history in a read-aloud capacity.
The Extension Package is for older students who are in need of extending the history portion of the plans with some additional higher level material. These readings are longer, as they are not meant to be read aloud, and the material is definitely in the range for 7th and 8th graders (or ages 13-14).
